WAUKESHA, WI - Douglas N. Hastad was inaugurated as the 14th president of Carroll College [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=hjufw4bab.0.l5jgw4bab.9dc9s4bab.2056&ts=S0248&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cc.edu%2F] on April 19. Hundreds of supporters gathered during a ceremony on the Carroll College campus to witness Hastad's installation. Representatives of several colleges and universities throughout the Midwest joined in a customary procession across campus. Hastad, a former chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, was hired last year to succeed Frank Falcone, the institution's president since 1993.

DECATUR, GA - Elizabeth Kiss, the founding director of the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University, was installed as the eighth president of Agnes Scott College [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=hjufw4bab.0.m5jgw4bab.9dc9s4bab.2056&ts=S0248&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.agnesscott.edu%2F] on April 20. She was hired last year to succeed Mary Brown Bullock, the first alumna president, who served the private liberal arts women's college for 11 years. Kiss (pronounced "quiche") was also an associate professor of the practice of political science and philosophy at Duke. About 2,000 people gathered at Agnes Scott to celebrate Kiss's presidency with a day of events dedicated to the theme "Stand Up, Speak Up: an Agenda for 21st Century Women." The ceremony started with a procession of dignitaries including 173 delegates from other colleges and universities, the mayors of Atlanta and Decatur, active and retired faculty, and members of the Agnes Scott board of trustees. A 1983 graduate of Presbyterian-related Davidson College, Kiss earned a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University in England in 1990.

Ross Sr. has been elected as the 17th president of his alma mater. Ross, who has been the executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem, NC, will leave that position June 30 to assume leadership of Davidson on Aug. 1. The Z. foundation supports social, economic and environmental justice, and promotes civic engagement. Before joining the foundation, Ross was a judge in North Carolina Superior Court for 17 years. He graduated from Davidson in 1972, as did his father in 1937 and his children in 1999 and 2001. He will succeed Davidson's president of 10 years, Robert F. Vagt.

GREENEVILLE, TN - Tusculum College [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=hjufw4bab.0.o5jgw4bab.9dc9s4bab.2056&ts=S0248&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tusculum.edu%2F] was one of 39 campuses across the country to host the National Post-Katrina College Summit, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the crisis along the U.S. Gulf Coast and to promote federal legislation calling for a New Deal-style program for the region. Related events held on the Tusculum campus April 11 included a public reading of the names of victims of Hurricane Katrina and a discussion by Tusculum students who have traveled to the hurricane-stricken areas. A portion of Spike Lee's documentary, "When the Levees Broke," was also shown. Students also conducted a petition drive to gather signatures supporting passage of federal legislation that would create 100,000 jobs rebuilding devastated Gulf Coast communities. The cost of establishing such a program, which includes job training, is estimated at $4 billion, according to the school's Web site.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -Coe College [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=hjufw4bab.0.p5jgw4bab.9dc9s4bab.2056&ts=S0248&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.coe.edu%2F] sophomore Ben Franta of Elkader, IA, is among 317 college students nationwide to receive the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater award given to undergraduates studying mathematics, science, or engineering. Franta, a double major in physics and mathematics, was one of six Iowa college students to receive the honor. The Goldwater scholarships are considered the country's most prestigious science awards. Established by Congress in 1986 to honor the former senator from Arizona, the awards provide recipients $15,000 toward their educations.

DANVILLE, KY - Centre College [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=hjufw4bab.0.q5jgw4bab.9dc9s4bab.2056&ts=S0248&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.centre.edu%2F] raised $8,000 for children's cancer research in March as part of St. Baldrick's Day, a worldwide fundraising program for children's cancer research. Forty-nine people had their heads shaved to raise money, including Centre professors, students, staff members and individuals from the community.
