Individual bishops respond to Lambeth Conference invitations announcement

By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] Some Episcopal Church bishops have responded to the May 22 announcement (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/79901_86175_ENG_HTM.htm) that a small number of bishops have not been invited to the 2008 Lambeth Conference.

New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson and Martyn Minns -- the latter chosen by the Anglican Church of Nigeria to be the "missionary bishop" for its Convocation of Anglicans in North America (http://www.canaconvocation.org) (CANA) -- were among the bishops Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, did not invite. Only serving diocesan bishops, suffragans and assistants, as opposed to retired bishops, were invited.

Robinson is one of the few duly elected bishops who did not receive an invitation, but Williams will explore how Robinson could be present as a guest to the conference, according to the Rev. Canon Kenneth Kearon, secretary general of the Anglican Communion.

Los Angeles seminar offers reconcilers 'third way,' hope

By Pat McCaughan

[ENS, Los Angeles] Gifted peacemakers and creative solutions won't resolve the conflicts in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion; changing hearts and church culture will, the Rev. Brian Cox told prospective reconcilers at St. James Church in Los Angeles on May 23.

"Our purpose is not to solve the conflict in the Episcopal Church but rather to promote a culture of reconciliation in the life of the church, a paradigm shift away from win-lose advocacy to faith-based reconciliation," said Cox, rector of Christ the King Church in Santa Barbara, California.

About 65 lay and clergy Episcopalians from across the nation are attending "A Third Way," a faith-based reconciliation training seminar being held through May 25 at St. James Church in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles.

Retired chaplain reflects on his service and how war has changed

By Sharon Sheridan

[Episcopal Life] When Charles Arlin attended basic training after joining the Army Reserves in 1955, he was "terribly homesick for the Episcopal Church."

"I went to the general Protestant service, and it didn't work for me," he recalls. Eventually, he found an Episcopal chaplain -- a classmate of his father's from seminary.

Twenty-five years later, Arlin re-entered the reserves as an Episcopal priest and chaplain. He retired in 1991 but anticipates returning to duty as a Civil Air Patrol (Air Force auxiliary) chaplain. He's also rector of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Midland Park, New Jersey.
