ELCA Awards Phoebe Herman Scholarships to 17 International Students 07-092-JB

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) awarded scholarships of $1,000 each to 17 international students attending ELCA colleges and universities in the 2007- 2008 academic year. The scholarships were awarded from the Phoebe Herman Scholarship Endowment Fund through ELCA Vocation and Education.

There are 28 ELCA colleges and universities.

Herman was an active Lutheran who lived in Selinsgrove, Pa. She established the scholarship fund through a 1994 bequest to the ELCA. The proceeds from the endowment may be used for scholarships for worthy students attending any Lutheran college in the United States, said Arne Selbyg, director for colleges and universities, ELCA Vocation and Education. The Vocation and Education unit decided to give preference to students who are not eligible for regular financial aid, Selbyg explained. The ELCA Foundation manages the scholarship fund.

"Each year we are reminded by this competitive process, how the colleges and universities that are related to the ELCA try to serve the needs of students from all over the world from all kinds of backgrounds, and how the presence of these students on the campuses of these colleges and universities add to the learning of all the students who choose to attend these institutions," Selbyg said.
