On the road in Western Kansas with the Presiding Bishop

The June trip was a first for Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, a first for the Diocese of Western Kansas, and a first for the Episcopal Church.

"This is the first time that a Presiding Bishop has visited Western Kansas outside of Salina," explained Bishop James Adams. And, he added, this was the first time that a sitting Presiding Bishop traveled throughout the Diocese of Western Kansas (http://www.westernkansas.org).

By the time the four-day road trip was concluded, the Presiding Bishop visited 14 churches -- including the largest, the smallest and the diocese's only house church -- plus an Episcopal organization and a tornado-ravaged area in 13 communities, shook hundreds of hands, enjoyed home cooking, and got to know the people of Western Kansas, just as they got to know her.

Jerusalem Bishop appeals for emergency aid

'Urgent' help necessary to stave off humanitarian crisis in Gaza

By Pat McCaughan

[ENS] The Rt. Rev. Suheil Dawani, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, has issued an emergency appeal for humanitarian aid to Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, still reeling from fallout of recent violence and shortages of medical supplies.

"June 14 was one of the worst days ever, the hospital had to open an extra ward to receive all the patients," Dawani wrote in a letter to the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem (AFEDJ) (www.americanfriends-jerusalem.org), referring to clashes between the Islamic group Hamas' takeover of the Gaza Strip and the Fatah Party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Hospital director Suhaila Tarazi said staff worked round the clock treating the wounded, many of whom were civilians. "It was very scary for us; I consider it the most bloody week we've had in the past five years," she said in a telephone interview from Gaza.

OPINION

Expecting too much from Sunday

By Tom Ehrich

[Religion News Service] Returning to Sunday parish ministry for four months has given me both a fresh appreciation of the basics and one caution to share with all who care about healthy churches.

First the caution: I think many congregations expect too much from Sunday. They want Sunday to do all of their work, from welcoming the new to serving the old, from teaching to pastoral care, from community-building to business meetings.

Sunday cannot bear that much weight. For one, there's not enough time; 60 minutes on Sunday can barely handle corporate worship. The rest feels like frenzy and lost focus.

Southern California priest Norm Freeman performs on European tour with Barbra Streisand

By Pat McCaughan

[ENS, Laguna Hills, California] For six weeks this summer the Rev. Norm Freeman will swap daily parish activities to play back-up for Barbra Streisand on what is billed as her first-ever continental European tour.

"Zurich is charming, Barbra sounds fantastic," said Freeman, after the legendary diva debuted June 18 to standing ovations at Zurich's 13,000-seat Hallenstadion. Freeman, who serves at St. George's Episcopal Church and Academy in Laguna Hills, California, is also a percussionist and timpanist in Streisand's 58-member orchestra.

Integrating parish life and his musical world are all in a day's ministry, says the Juilliard-trained Freeman. He has been known to load his vibraphones into the St. George's Academy van and secure them with "bungee" elastic cord for use at jazz vespers at neighboring Southern California congregations.
