(NCC News) NCC names program director for women's ministry

New York, August 7, 2007--The National Council of Churches USA (NCC) has named an experienced community organizer and Lutheran pastor to the post of Program Director for Women's Ministry.

The Rev. Ann Tiemeyer, currently director of Koinonia, an urban ministry in New York, will start work with the NCC on October 1.

As Program Director for Women's Ministry, she will seek to champion the spiritual and professional development of women in positions of leadership and responsibility in the NCC and its member churches. She will also develop programs and experiences that will encourage women to become involved in the ecumenical movement, especially young women. The Rev. Tiemeyer will be based in the NCC's New York office.

As director of Koinonia NYC since 2002, Tiemeyer developed community based programs to respond to the effects of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The programs include a day camp with a mental health component, Faith Walks at Ground Zero, and Servant Events in New York City.

From 1995 to 1999, Tiemeyer was chair of the Commission for Women

Steering Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and a committee member from 1993 to 1999. She was a board member of the ELCA's Division for World Mission and Ecumenism from 1985 to 1988.

The Rev. Tiemeyer has also served as pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church parishes in Woodside, N.Y., Van Nuys, Calif., and Fairview, N.J.

From 1984 to 1985, she was advocate and volunteer coordinator for

Lutheran Social Services Hunger Ministries in Columbus, Ohio.

Tiemeyer earned her Master of Divinity degree in 1988 at Yale Divinity School, where she was recognized for outstanding preaching in her graduating class. She is a summa cum laude graduate of Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio.

"Ann Tiemeyer brings experience, enthusiasm and a joyous faith to this important position," said the Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell, associate general secretary of the NCC for Justice and Advocacy. "We are delighted by her decision to join our staff, and we look forward to working in partnership with her."

The National Council of Churches USA is the ecumenical voice of 35 of America's Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican, historic African American and traditional peace churches. These NCC denominations have 45 million faithful members in 100,000 congregations in all 50 states.
