Oct. 21 designated Bread Sunday

Anti-hunger group offers free worship resources

by Evan Silverstein Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE - Bread for the World (BFW), a Christian anti-hunger group has produced new worship resources to help congregations renew their commitment to fighting hunger during an annual day of observance called "Bread for the World Sunday."

Most observances this year will take place on Oct. 21, although congregations are encouraged to choose any Sunday between World Food Day (Oct. 16) and Thanksgiving (Nov. 22).

During every autumn harvest season, hundreds of churches across the nation take part in the event, which is sponsored by BFW, a lobbying group based in Washington, DC. The 58,000-member non-partisan organization is supported by 2,500 churches and more than 45 denominations and church agencies, including the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP).

"Bread" lobbies Congress and the administration for public-policy changes to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in the United States and abroad.

The group has compiled new worship resources for participating churches and is making it available at no charge. The materials include a worship bulletin insert, a reflection resource, a responsive prayer and liturgy selection for use during worship, a reflection resource designed specifically for children, and examples of how churches have observed Bread for the World Sunday in the past.

The Rev. Raymond B. Kemp, a Roman Catholic priest with the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, who currently works at the Jesuit Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, provided a scripture reflection.

Ann Davis, director of Children's Ministries and Discipleship for the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, provided the scripture reflection written for children.

To request the worship resources and bulletin insert, call Bread for the World at (800) 82-BREAD (822-7323).
