Presbytery and synod news

by Jerry Van Marter Presbyterian News Service

MEMPHIS, TN - The Presbytery of the Mid-South recently celebrated the centennial of Dyer Presbyterian Church. Church members removed the church's cornerstone, searching for a time capsule. The cornerstone was empty but a few loose bricks nearby revealed a treasure trove: a Dyer Reporter newspaper in excellent condition; letterheads from several businesses, two of which are still operating, a small Bible and a list of the church's original members.

Nearly 200 people attended the July 15 centennial celebration of the church, which currently has about 38 members.

OXFORD, MS - Participants in Vacation Bible School at Independence Presbyterian Church in Batesville made blankets as part of their summer mission project

The 63-member congregation in the Presbytery of St. Andrew donated the blankets to Project Linus, a non-profit organization that provides blankets to seriously ill and traumatized children throughout the United States.

IOWA CITY, IA - The Presbytery of East Iowa is sponsoring a one-day workshop on incorporating the theater arts into the worship and education life of congregations.

The workshop, "The Word in Action," will be held Oct. 13 at First Presbyterian Church here. It will include sessions on performance basics and how to teach them to others; acting exercises that make learning fun while building community; new and innovative ideas for using drama in worship and Christian education; how to find and create scripts; creative ways to stage Scripture; and fun storytelling techniques for church settings.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Big Cove Presbyterian Church in North Alabama Presbytery has recently opened a second worship site, First Light Worship Center, in a shopping mall in nearby Hampton Cove. The new facility also houses the church offices.

The new location, funded partially by a PC(USA) Mission Program Grant, enables Big Cove to offer a variety of worship experiences. First Light, which is also home to Big Cove's alternative worship service on Sunday morning's, offers worship of casual dress, contemporary music, interactive preaching and weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper.

Traditiional worship is still held in Big Cove's sanctuary, two miles from First Light.

ANCHORAGE, AK - Yukon Presbytery has launched a promising new mission strategy for the Arctic region of the presbytery. Key components of the strategy - developed during recent consultation at Olgonik Presbyterian Church in Wainwright - include designing ministry programs specifically to reach young leaders (ages 25-45) and their families; partnering with the "Building Healthy Communities" regional program to address issues of addiction and family turmoil; and expanding the presbytery's Commissioned Lay Pastor training program among elders in every Arctic village.

Between September 2007 and May 2008, nine different pastors will be recruited to fly to Wainwright. Each visiting pastor will spend 11 days - preaching on two Sundays, going with congregational leaders on pastoral visitations in the community and leading mid-week fellowship and Bible study on discipleship themes.

FRANKLIN, TN - Contributions to the Jane Hines Scholarship in Journalism have topped the $5,000 mark, one year after the program was inaugurated to honor the longtime editor of The Presbyterian Voice, the award-winning newspaper of the Synod of Living Waters. Hines retired in 2006.

The initial $5,000 will be matched, doubling the fund. The synod's Communications Committee will administer the scholarship program as soon as it reaches a sustainable level of funding. All applicants must be active members of the PC(USA).

To contribute to the Janes Hines Scholarship in Journalism, send a check to the Synod of Living Waters, 318 Seaboard Lane, Suite 205, Franklin, TN 37067.

MORGANTON, NC and KINGSPORT, TN - The Presbyteries of Western North Carolina and Holston are co-sponsoring an Oct. 19-20 event for youth ministry leaders entitled "The Love Triangle." The event will be held at Holston's camp at Banner Elk, NC.

The event is predicated on the assumption that theology, technique and process are important components of youth ministry, but that building relationships is essential. The event, led by the Revs. Bill and Aimee Buchanan of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville, NC, will help youth leaders build those relationships through worship, service and spiritual development.
