Notes about people

by Jerry Van Marter Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE - Robert L. Thompson has joined the General Assembly Council's communications and funds development staff as interim director of funds development, effective July 16. Thompson, an elder at Waverly Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, has served as counsel to more than 200 churches and church-related organizations, schools, medical institutions, and other nonprofit organizations in a 40-year career as a fundraising executive.

One of Thompson's first priorities is to oversee the successful completion of the Mission Initiative: Joining Hearts & Hands, the denomination's national campaign to raise $40 million for new overseas mission personnel and church growth in this country, particularly racial ethnic and immigrant congregations. Joining Hearts & Hands, which has raised $27.6 million as of June 30, 2007, is scheduled to bring its final report to the 218th General Assembly (2008) in San Jose, Ca.

To achieve the campaign's ambitious goal, Thompson has recently completed the staffing for Joining Hearts & Hands by recruiting a team of experienced consultants - John Elder Wray, Pittsburgh; James L. Vande Berg, St. Augustine, FL; Robert J. Kukla, West Chicago, IL; and Kevin J. Garvey, Zionsville, IN - who, along with David York, will execute the final push. York has served as campaign director since October 2006.

CHICAGO - The Rev. Jerry Van Marter, coordinator for news services for the PC(USA), has been elected chair of the Communications Commission of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. (NCC). He will serve a four-year term beginning in January 2008.

The NCC's Communications Commission brings together communications professionals of the council's 36 member communions to address issues such as news and media relations, Web design and content, electronic media production and distribution, and media education and advocacy. As well as sharing "best practices," the commission seeks to coordinate the member churches' efforts in those areas.

The commission also elected Dianna Ott, the PC(USA)'s coordinator for creative services (Web, Media Services and graphic standards) as chair of its Web Staff Committee.

LOUISVILLE - The Rev. Rose Niles-McCrary, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon, NY and D.Min. faculty for New York Theological Seminary, has been called as associate for theological education and seminary relations for the GAC in its Theology, Worship, and Education program area. She begins her new work Sept. 17.

A life-long Presbyterian, Niles-McCrary's leadership in the church was recognized at an early age. When she was seventeen she was elected as the Vice-Moderator of the Synod of the Northeast and in 1995 she was elected as Moderator of the Synod. She is a graduate of Harvard Radcliffe University, Harvard Divinity School (M.Div.), and New York Theological Seminary (D.Min.).

Niles-McCrary will be leading the Theological Education Fund (TEF) effort, the only denomination-wide funding for seminaries in the PC(USA), and working closely with seminary staff in admissions, communications, and development.
