Church World Service Makes Givespot.com's new top 100 Charities list

December 18, 2007

NEW YORK -- GiveSpot.com, a relatively new user-friendly charity ranking website that helps consumers evaluate more than 900,000 nonprofits and charitable organizations, has recognized the global relief, development and refugee protection agency Church World Service (CWS) as one of its top 100 humanitarian organizations.

According to GiveSpot's website, this is the first year the organization has published a list of 501(c) charities it deems "some of the most efficient fundraisers and spenders." (http://www.givespot.com/lists/give100.htm)

"U.S. charitable giving reached a record $295 billion in 2006, according to Giving USA," says GiveSpot editor Alexis Crawford. "Increasing numbers of new people are giving, and our GiveSpot.com list was created to make it easier for potential donors to spot organizations that will put their funds to good use."

Expressing appreciation for the GiveSpot recognition, Church World Service Executive Director and CEO Rev. John L. McCullough said, "We are deeply aware of the needs of the most vulnerable here in the U.S. and abroad, and these needs come home to us particularly during the holiday season. GiveSpot's top one hundred charities span concerns ranging from animal protection to U.S. public policy. We're therefore especially pleased," he said, "that 28 of the GiveSpot 100 are international relief and development agencies and that Church World Service is among those."

GiveSpot's selection criteria require "that a charity had to solicit funds from the public and run in an efficient and transparent manner. All of the groups spend 75 percent or more of annual expenses on program services. Many are also highly rated by well-regarded charity evaluation sites, such as American Institute of Philanthropy, CharityNavigator.com, BBB Wise Giving Alliance and others."

Earlier this year, Church World Service received a high-ranking four-star rating from Charity Navigator. The 60-year-old humanitarian agency currently holds an A ranking in the Charity Watch Charity Rating Guide of the American Institute of Philanthropy and is also registered with the online giving directory GuideStar.

This holiday season, CWS encourages donors to consider alternative gift giving to help fund needed relief, educational or social and economic development tools and resources for the world's poorest. The agency's alternative gifts catalogue is available online, along with secure online donation vehicles, at: https://secure.churchworldservice.org/catalog/display.php?sid=2
