Deadline extended for Pre-General Conference Briefing

Jan. 10, 2008

The deadline for delegates and communicators to register for the Pre-General Conference News Briefing without incurring a late fee has been extended to Jan. 15.

The briefing, set for Jan. 24-26, is being offered to help first-elected delegates and heads of delegation, church communicators and secular journalists prepare for The United Methodist Church's legislative gathering. Other delegates are also welcome to register, though space is limited. The event will be at the Hilton Fort Worth Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.

Registration details, an overview of the agenda and information on hotel arrangements are available at www.gc2008.umc.org. The registration fee of $225 covers meals and materials, and it is strictly based on the cost of producing the briefing. People who register by Jan. 15 will avoid incurring a $50 late fee.

The United Methodist Church's legislative assembly, General Conference, will meet April 23-May 2 in Fort Worth. General Conference is the only entity that speaks for the entire denomination. Nearly 1,000 delegates from around the world will gather to set direction for the church for the next four years.

The 2008 General Conference will be unlike its predecessors in key ways, such as its messaging and its emphasis on four areas of focus for United Methodist ministries. Sessions at the Pre-General Conference Briefing will focus on these topics as well as on legislation and issues facing General Conference, with panel discussions featuring church leaders and other expert speakers.

The communicators and heads of delegations will also have the opportunity to focus on specific topics of interest to their groups in breakout sessions. The delegates will work on holy conferencing, while the communicators will discuss covering General Conference before, during and after the assembly.

The briefing, sponsored by United Methodist Communications, will also include a tour of the Fort Worth Convention Center and downtown vicinity.

Questions about the briefing can be directed to the United Methodist Communications Customer Service department at (888) 346-3862 or by e-mail to Sheila Suddeth at ssuddeth@umcom.org.
