CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Associated Church Press (ACP) named "Cafe --Stirring the Spirit Within," the online e-zine of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a top winner in its awards competition for work done in 2007. "Cafe" was named "Best in Class" in ACP's independent Web site or e-zine category.

The awards were presented April 22 at the ACP's annual convention in Westlake, Texas. The ACP is an organization of communication professionals in the Christian community. The ACP, founded in 1916, is the oldest religious press association in North America.

Edited by Elizabeth McBride, Deborah Bogaert and Terri Lackey, Cafe "provides high quality product for its audience," wrote Diane Bugeja, judge, who is a lecturer in the School of Journalism and Communication, Iowa State University, Ames.

"The magazine writing style is top notch and provides an intimate yet professional voice. The journalists use relevant and quality research and sources to create articles and podcasts that are meaningful to all women, no matter their religious beliefs or associations," Bugeja wrote.

In addition the ACP gave awards of excellence to The Lutheran, the magazine of the ELCA, and to Lutheran Woman Today, the magazine of Women of the ELCA.

Awards of excellence are given to the top entries in each ACP awards category. Two awards of excellence went to The Lutheran:

+ Convention or Meeting Coverage, Magazine: "Assembly Marks ELCA at 20," by staff, September issue.

+ Theological Reflection (Short Format): "The Annunciation Reconsidered" by Debra K. Farrington, March issue.

The Lutheran won three awards of merit (second place) and five honorable mentions in various categories.

Lutheran Woman Today won an award of excellence in the Bible Resource category for "Blessed to Follow: The Beatitudes as a Compass for Discipleship," by Dr. Martha E. Stortz, which appeared in the September-December issue. The magazine also received two awards of merit and an honorable mention in other categories.

The ELCA News Service won an award of merit for a news story in the News Service/Newsletter/Web site category.
