>MISSION

Restoration of New Orleans focus of annual Recovery Ministries
conference

>By Daphne Mack

[Episcopal News Service] The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina,
and its subsequent long-term recovery process, served as a back drop for
the annual gathering of Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church,
Inc.

For three days, May 8-10, 58 people attended "Blending addiction
recovery with recovery along the Gulf Coast" where they heard from
several speakers, attended workshops, 12-Step meetings, and Eucharist
all while involving themselves in the New Orleans lifestyle.

"One of the things we did to fully experience New Orleans, was purchase
three day passes for everyone and used the bus/trolley system to get
around," said Eleanor Stromberger, president of Recovery Ministries. "It
gave everyone the experience of being with the people of New Orleans."

Missioner Elyn MacInnis tells of devastation, hope in China after
earthquakes

>By Mary Brennan

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Elyn MacInnis, an Episcopal mission
volunteer in China, has started an online journal to report on the
effects of recent earthquakes on the people and congregations of the
country. "Elyn's Journal" documents the results of the devastating
earthquakes, how local people are coping with the destruction, and what
Christians in the region are doing to help.

"The loss of life is dreadful, and the numbers of people without houses
is staggering," Elyn reports. "The quake reminds me a little of 9-11, or
when the Challenger exploded on the way to space. It is a time when
everyone is almost completely focused on what happened. Many, many
people are rising to the occasion and trying to help in whatever way
they can."

In addition to documenting the day-to-day aftermath, "Elyn's Journal"
includes prayer requests, needs, and photos.

Alan Jones urges Seminary of the Southwest graduates to become fully
open to God

[ETSS] The dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco urged Episcopal
Theological Seminary of the Southwest (ETSS) graduates to "be priestly
people -- I'm not talking about ordination, but the vision of the fully
human being as a priestly vocation."

"We need, in short, to accept that liberating orthodoxy which both
guards and celebrates the Good News," said the Very Rev. Alan Jones
during his commencement sermon.

Forty-one degrees and certificates were conferred during the May 13
graduation. The Class of 2008 represents 17 Episcopal dioceses from
Hawaii and Los Angeles to Southwest Florida to Virginia. The graduating
class includes eight denominations and students from Pakistan and
Mexico.
