Honduras Bishop Lloyd Allen speaks of 'new dawn' in diocese

>By Daphne Mack

[Episcopal News Service] During his May 23 visit to the Episcopal Church
Center in New York City, Bishop Lloyd Allen of the Diocese of Honduras
described a flourishing diocese that is teaching its congregants to be
"independent."

"Since we established that we would do evangelism head-over-heels, it's
a new dawn in our diocese," said Allen, president of Province IX and a
member of the Presiding Bishop's Council of Advice.

He said programs such as Experiencing God, the Cursillo Movement
(http://www.episcopalcursillo.org), Happening, New Beginning and
Evangelism Explosion are "used throughout the diocese" and have caused
growth. There are presently 151 congregations in the diocese, which is
divided into nine deaneries (San Pedro, Sula, Comayagua, Copan, Omoa and
Puerto Cortez, Santa Barbara, Tegucigalpa, Paraiso, Atlantida, and the
Islands of Bahia) in the North Western and South Central Eastern region.

Abagail Nelson named ERD's senior vice president of programs

[Episcopal Relief and Development] Robert Radtke, president of Episcopal
Relief and Development, has announced that Abagail Nelson has been named
senior vice president of programs.

Nelson has served as vice president of programs since 2005, and was
previously ERD's program associate for Latin American and the Caribbean.
She joined ERD in 1999.

"Under [Nelson's] stewardship the programs of ERD have reached nearly
$20 million per year in over 40 countries," said Radtke in making the
announcement. "She has played an important leadership role in shaping
and overseeing all of ERD's programs in Latin America, Asia and Africa
and particularly ERD's Katrina Response program and NetsforLife(r). The
journey that ERD has made since its days as the Presiding Bishop's Fund
for World Relief would not have been possible without Abagail's many
gifts and her commitment to ERD's mission to serve the least of these,
as we are asked to do by Jesus in Matthew 25."

General Theological Seminary celebrates 186th commencement

[GTS] The General Theological Seminary held its 186th commencement
ceremony on May 14 on its campus located in the Chelsea district of
Manhattan.

Degrees and honors were conferred during a stately service, recited in
Latin according to a form unchanged from the late 19th century. Majestic
brass music resounded and bells tolled as 49 women and men received
degrees, diplomas, or certificates from the Seminary's dean, the Rev.
Ward B. Ewing. Of these, 35 were awarded the Master of Divinity degree.
The seminary also awarded its honorary doctorate to four persons
distinguished by faithful service and ministry: the Rev. Dr. Sarah
Coakley, the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, the Rev. Dr. Urs von Arx, and Samuel A.
Waterston. In addition, the Clement Clarke Moore Medal was awarded to
Joseph A. Davenport, III.

Coakley, a theologian and philosopher of religion, taught at Lancaster
and Oxford universities before going to Harvard Divinity School in 1993.
In October 2007, she became the Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity at
Cambridge University. Her recent books include "Powers and Submissions:
Spirituality, Philosophy and Gender and Rethinking Gregory of Nyssa."

CDSP commencement preacher: 'The Spirit doesn't always play nice'

>School awards three honorary degrees

[Church Divinity School of the Pacific] Church Divinity School of the
Pacific (CDSP) commencement preacher the Rev. Dr. L. William Countryman
cautioned graduates May 23 that "the Spirit doesn't always play nice."

CDSP graduated 41 seminary students during the Eucharist held at the
Episcopal Church-affiliated school in Berkeley, California.

"The Spirit is looking around for people to build anew...to build
buildings with open doors and a vast welcome...where lives can be built
anew, the lives of individuals and the lives of communities," said
Countryman.

"Beyond Smells & Bells: The Wonder and Power of Christian Liturgy" from
Paraclete Press, by Mark Galli, 142 pages, paperback, c. 2008, $16.95

[Paraclete Press] Liturgy lures us through our senses, grounds us in a
great tradition, and plants us in the midst of a diverse community,
present and past.

Are you attracted to liturgy but don't know why? Are you considering
changing to liturgical tradition? Are you already immersed in liturgical
worship but want to grasp its deeper significance? Beyond Smells and
Bells addresses the lure and relevance of liturgy for your life today.

Thousands of Christians become interest in liturgy each year for the
first time, as they turn to orthodoxy, tradition, and the lasting
rituals of the Christian faith. In a culture that values spontaneity,
liturgy grounds us in something enduring. In a culture that assumes
truth is a product of the mind, liturgy helps us experience truth in
mind, body, and spirit. In Mark Galli's able telling, liturgy is an
intriguing story, full of mystery, that transforms us.
