Archbishops call on United Nations for mediation, protection in Zimbabwe

[Lambeth Palace] Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and Archbishop
of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba spoke May 28 with Ban Ki-moon, secretary
general of the United Nations, to express their grave concerns about the
increasing violence of what appears to be a sustained campaign against
the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe.

Bishops' London walk to underscore commitment to MDGs

[Lambeth Palace] The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has
announced plans to mount an unprecedented mass walk of bishops and other
faith leaders through central London during the forthcoming Lambeth
Conference to demonstrate the Anglican Communion's determination to help
end extreme poverty across the globe.

The archbishop will be joined by approximately 600 other archbishops and
bishops, and their spouses, alongside other UK faith leaders for the
high-profile symbol of commitment to the United Nations' Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) -- eight promises made by world leaders to
halve world poverty by 2015. The event, which will take place on
Thursday, July 24, will culminate in a rally in the grounds of Lambeth
Palace, the London home and office of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The event is being organized in partnership with Micah Challenge UK,
part of the international Micah Challenge movement dedicated to uniting
Christians to work together for an end to world poverty.

>MISSION

>A greenhouse grows mosquito nets

Students use fitness campaign to help ERD fight malaria

[Episcopal Relief and Development] When Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori visited St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School on Manhattan's
Upper West Side in New York City to bless their greenhouse in January
2008, she inadvertently planted the seeds for a very successful
fundraising campaign on behalf of Episcopal Relief and Development's
malaria prevention initiative, NetsforLife(r).

In thanks for the Presiding Bishop's visit and blessing, the school
decided to organize a spring fundraiser for NetsforLife(r). Students
were invited to solicit people to sponsor them to exercise up to 30
minutes a day (for example, $1 per minute of exercise) during a weeklong
program called "Get Fit Together." In just one week the school raised
nearly $30,000 -- enough for more than 2,500 nets.

"We are proud of our students and the enthusiasm with which they
embraced the NetsforLife(r) project," said Virginia Connor, head of
school. "One of the important elements of our mission is our desire to
connect students to the world around them...this project allowed our
students to learn about children in a very different part of the world,
and to feel compassion for them as well as kinship with them."

"Living Loved: Knowing Jesus as the Lover of Your Soul" from Church
Publishing, Inc., by Peter M. Wallace, 176 pages, paperback, c. 2007,
$16

[Church Publishing, Inc.] This title is a devotional book of meditations
based on specific verses or passages from the Gospel of John. It uses
the highly acclaimed and popular translation, The Message, by Eugene
Peterson. Like Wallace's earlier book, Out of the Quiet, it consists of
short and very accessible meditations, approaching Jesus through the
eyes of the disciple whom Jesus loved -- so that men and women can begin
to see themselves in John's place as the beloved one, and, as a result,
take up the responsibilities of discipleship in a world that needs
Jesus' loving touch.

"An open-hearted book on knowing, experiencing and sharing love. Peter
Wallace has thoroughly studied the Gospel of John, and he brings to us
fresh words and loving insights." -- Nora Gallagher, author of Changing
Light
