Virginia court rules application of 'Division Statute' is constitutional

Case involves former Episcopal Church members who have laid claim to  parish
property

[Episcopal News Service] A Fairfax, Virginia, judge ruled June 27 that  his
application of the state's so-called "Division Statute" (Section  57-9(A))
(http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+57-9) is
constitutional.

The Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Virginia  (http://www.thediocese.net)
had argued (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/81803_97479_ENG_HTM.htm)  during a
May 28 hearing that that portion of the Code of Virginia, which the  court
had earlier ruled can be used to determine property rights when some  church
congregations choose to leave their denominations, is unconstitutional.

Jerusalem friends launch schools appeal, seek development officer

[Episcopal News Service] The American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese  of
Jerusalem (AFEDJ) has begun a new fundraising appeal to help diocesan
schools educate students and increase peacemaking in the region. The
organization is also seeking a development officer.

AFEDJ board members in April visited schools in the Episcopal Diocese of
Jerusalem "whose excellent teachers are leading the effort to educate  future
leaders and provide a strong Christian presence," the organization notes  in
a letter signed by board president Dennis C. Hensley and president-elect
Phoebe Griswold.

Schools visited included St. George's School in Jerusalem, the Arab
Evangelical Episcopal School, and the Episcopal Technological and  Vocational
Training Center, both in Ramallah.

Camp Wakonda continues to provide respite to those affected by HIV/AIDS

[ENS] For 14 years, parishioners throughout the Diocese of Southern  Virginia
have made it possible for adults and children affected and infected by
HIV/AIDS to leave their illness for a short period of time and simply  have
some fun at Camp Wakonda.
Since 1995, Camp Wakonda
(http://www.holytrinityonancock.com/ministriesandprograms.htm#Wakonda)  has
operated a free week-long day camp as an outlet for these individuals.
Adults spend time learning macramé and other arts and crafts, bowling  and
being treated to massage therapy and manicures while their children are
divided into age-appropriate groups for canoeing, fishing, kickball,
softball, and arts and crafts.

Bill Falvey joins Church Publishing Inc. as manager of publicity and  special
sales

[Church Publishing Inc] Bill Falvey has been appointed as manager of
publicity and special sales for Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI),  Dr.
Davis Perkins, CPI's senior vice president and publisher, announced June  26.

"This is a hybrid position for us," Perkins explained, "and an exciting  one,
combining the essential elements of product communications with direct
sales. Bill possesses a unique skill set in religious marketing, sales,  and
communications, which will serve CPI, its authors, and key accounts  well. We
are very fortunate to be bringing a person of Bill's caliber and  experience
on to the CPI team. He is so highly regarded in denominational  publishing
circles; this is a real coup for CPI."

Falvey will report to Mark Dazzo, vice president of global marketing and
sales. "Bill will be responsible for planning and implementing publicity
campaigns for CPI imprints, product lines, and authors," Dazzo said. "He
also will handle direct sales programs with key accounts including
Amazon.com, Baker & Taylor, and Ingram/Spring Arbor distributors, plus
Cokesbury (the retail bookstore chain and national cataloger owned by  the
United Methodist Publishing House). We also will re-assign select
international partnerships and distributors to Bill later this year."

On the road at Niobrara with the Presiding Bishop

[Episcopal News Service] Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has  a
new name: "Looks For The Needy."

In one of the highest Native American honors that can be bestowed upon a
person, Jefferts Schori was given a Lakota name, Ni-ce Olewin, which  means,
"Looks for the Needy."

This honor was presented on the first day of the 2008 Niobrara  Convocation
in the Diocese of South Dakota June 19. The Niobrara Convocation is the
annual gathering of the Episcopalians living on the Indian Reservations  in
the diocese.

Advance planning helps make giving and receiving care a positive  experience

[Episcopal Life] I read with interest Abby Bates' "Even at the Grave"
testimony of coming alongside Eleanor ("Even at the grave: An exercise  of
law becomes a lesson in God's love," March). Now, I have a heart of  grief as
she shared that Eleanor had been neglected at home by her home health  aide.

I have walked the path as an "adult child of aging parents" and now as a
caregiver and health minister. Sometimes it is a very difficult path to  be a
caregiver. From my roles, I have a few suggestions to help care giving  and
care receiving be a positive experience for everyone.

Newark youth conservatory changes lives through the arts

[Episcopal Life] Seeking to combat declining church attendance and  rising
crime among teenagers, the Diocese of Newark has established a music and
dance program to help build self-esteem and develop valuable life skills
among inner-city youth.

"The steady decline in youth attendance at churches and religious  programs
plus the alarming increase in crime among our youth point up an obvious
need," says Dee Jackson Field, director of the Youth Arts Conservatory.

The conservatory at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, Newark, was
established in October 2007 in response to the cathedral's need to  provide
recreational, cultural and arts education programs to enable young  people to
learn positive ways to express themselves, enhance their worship  experience
and ultimately improve their sense of self-worth, she says. It began  with
donations from the cathedral and from a not-for-profit organization run  by
Field and her husband, Philip, the cathedral's minister of music, and
received its first grant award in January.
