Reactions to Lambeth Conference span the spectrum
>By Mary Frances Schjonberg
[Episcopal News Service, Canterbury] The buses bearing the 2008 Lambeth
Conference's 670 purple cassock-clad bishops had barely arrived at
Canterbury Cathedral for the 18-day gathering's final Eucharist August 3
when reactions to the event and its final reflections document began to
appear.
The reactions ranged across the spectrum of opinion, with some urging
decisive action in concert with the comments made in the reflections
document and some cautioning against making legislation out of a document
that is a self-described narrative of the conference.
Noticeably quiet on that day was the Global Anglican Future Conference,
which held a June gathering of conservative Anglicans and Episcopalians in
Jerusalem. Its silence was noteworthy considering that the absence of the
so-called GAFCON bishops is referenced in the introductory section of the
reflections document.

Lengthy reflections document called 'narrative' of Lambeth experience
Topics range from the environment and peace in Korea to sexuality and
covenant
>By Mary Frances Schjonberg
[Episcopal News Service, Canterbury] A 44-page document meant to reflect the
experience of the bishops who participated in the 2008 Lambeth Conference is
filled with many details from the many conversations that took place during
the 18-day gathering in Canterbury -- and many important statements about
what was discussed.
Yet it admittedly cannot replicate the experience which it describes.
Perth Archbishop Roger Herft, who chaired the document's writing committee,
wrote in the introduction that the end result is a narrative of "our lived
experience and the open and honest discussions we have had together."

Eighteenth annual Solo Flight conference set to build community
[Episcopal News Service] Single adults of all ages can share experiences and
gather ideas for "creating communities of ones" at the 18th annual Solo
Flight conference, August 29-September 1 at Kanuga Conferences, Inc., in
Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Solo Flight is an intergenerational conference for single adults that offers
opportunities for spiritual growth, learning, fellowship and networking with
those who share similar values.
According to Kay Collier McLaughlin, Solo Flight founder and coordinator,
this year's conference will share ideas of how to go about building such
communities, both individually and in parishes.

Budding artists use hands and feet to create church mural
>By Jerry Hames
[Episcopal Life] Again this spring, as they had done in two previous years,
the children in Mr. Baldwin's church school class created a mural -- but
this time with a difference. Like the two others, it measures 12 feet by 8
feet.
But in creating this year's "Trinity" wall hanging, the 10- to 12-year-old
budding artists decided to use their hands and feet instead of paint
brushes. Their finished creation, blessed by Bishop Gene Robinson in June
during his visit to Christ Church, Exeter, New Hampshire, now hangs in the
parish hall for all to admire.
"We seem to have turned this into an annual event," said Peter Baldwin,
teacher for the fifth- and sixth-graders, who now is "prepping" the first
mural that was created in 2006 so it can be displayed outside the church.
"We have space for five murals inside the church and five outside, so I have
a few years yet to go," he joked.

"The Anglican Communion and Homosexuality: A Resource to Enable Listening
and Dialogue" from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, edited by
Philip Groves, 332 pages, paperback, c. 2008, $26
[Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge] Anglicans believe that the
Bible, the tradition of the Church and human reason are the channels through
which we can hear God speaking to us.
This volume offers clear and accurate resources intended to help bishops,
clergy and lay people in the Anglican Communion to listen to God and to one
another on the subject of human sexuality, taking into account in particular
Resolution 1.10 of the 1998 Lambeth Conference, which encourages a readiness
'to listen to the experience of homosexual persons'. This book is a
contribution to the Anglican Communion's Listening Process.
The contributors to this book are women and men who reflect the geographical
and theological diversity of the Communion. They include Bishops, clergy
and laity with a wide range of experience and expertise.
