A delegation from the United Church of Christ visited Jordan, Syria, and
Lebanon during the period of July 9-17. The delegation was composed of four
persons: Rev. Dr. Jim Antal, Rev. Roddy Dankerson, Rev. Dr. John Deckenback
(conference ministers), and Dr Peter Makari (Executive Director for ME and
coordinator of the visit). The visit of the delegation aimed at establishing
relations with churches in the region, learning from the churches in the
Middle East about their situations and learning about the Christian-Muslim
coexistence. The delegation met with different church leaders in the
different countries and had encounters with Muslim leaders as well. The
delegation heard stories of many Iraqi refugees in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon
in their struggle to maintain their life in the neighboring countries, and
how MECC and local churches are working to support them in relief work. The
delegation met with MECC General Secretary and senior staff in Beirut and
heard from them about the different activities of the Council.
