Presiding Bishop, other Episcopalians call for justice in Gulf Coast

[Episcopal News Service] Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and
other Episcopalians are among 105 ecumenical and interfaith leaders who
have signed on to a statement declaring that "the slow pace of recovery
and the new needs caused by Ike and Gustav's destruction have created a
moral crisis along the Gulf Coast that demands a powerful response from
people of faith."

The statement, issued by the Gulf Coast Civic Works Campaign, notes that
"while the nation has learned to better prepare for this latest
hurricane, whether by inaction or injustice, we have still failed to
protect the wellbeing of Gulf Coast survivors, new residents and their
families, especially the children, the poor, the sick, and the
vulnerable through just long-term rebuilding policies which fully
support human rights."

"A Land as God Made It: Jamestown and the Birth of America" from Perseus
Books Group, by James Horn, 337 pages, paperback, c. 2005, $15.95

[Perseus Books Group] Although it was the first permanent English
settlement in North America, Jamestown is too often overlooked in the
writing of American history. Founded thirteen years before the Mayflower
sailed, Jamestown's courageous settlers have been overshadowed ever
since by the pilgrims of Plymouth. But as historian James Horn
demonstrates in this vivid and meticulously researched account,
Jamestown -- not Plymouth -- was the true crucible of American history.
Jamestown introduced slavery into English-speaking North America; it
became the first of England's colonies to adopt a representative
government; and it was the site of the first white-Indian clashes over
territorial expansion. A Land As God Made It offers the definitive
account of the colony that give rise to America.
