>In Congo, ERD responds to civil unrest

[ERD] Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is providing critical
emergency assistance to more than 200 displaced people from the Province
de L'Eglise Anglicane in the north-east region of the Democratic
Republic of Congo.

Bishop Henri Isingoma and Anglicans from the Diocese of Boga were forced
to flee their homes last week after a recent upsurge of rebel violence.
They were able to circumvent the rebels by traveling for two days
through the forests to seek refuge in Bunia, the capital of the Ituri
province.

About 40 families are temporarily living in church buildings in Bunia.
United Nations peacekeepers have been stationed around Bunia to quell
the violence but tensions remain high as government troops clash with
rebels in neighboring regions only six miles away from the Bunia. As the
threat of attack persists outside of the town, displaced people are
continuing to seek shelter in Bunia churches. It remains unclear when
the rebel groups will disperse and allow the families to return home
securely. ERD is providing funds for the churches to feed and shelter
the refugees until they can safely relocate.

Peacemaking, voting are topics of two-week set of bulletin inserts

[Episcopal Life Weekly] Bulletin inserts from Episcopal Life Weekly for
October 19 and October 26 carry dual messages from The Episcopal Peace
Fellowship; one on Christian peacemaking, including a list of resources
for individuals and congregations interested in this ministry; and the
other on "Praying Your Vote, Voting Your Prayer," with thoughts from
several Episcoplians across the country on casting ballots as an act of
Christian witness as the United States approaches the presidential
election on November 4.

The insert for November 4, to be available next week, will carry a
message on voting as stewardship from Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori.

>Reading camps help lift kids out of poverty

>By Rebecca Jones

[Episcopal Life] If kids can't read, they can't excel.

That simple premise led the Diocese of Lexington (Kentucky) to create a
summer reading camp seven years ago. Now the Diocese of Iowa has picked
up the idea. And half a dozen other U.S. dioceses and churches as far
away as South Africa are studying the literacy-camp model.

The Lexington and Iowa programs are examples of Episcopal Church Jubilee
Ministries, a network of more than 600 social-justice ministries at the
local and diocesan levels, coordinated by the office of Jubilee
Ministries at the Episcopal Church Center in New York.

The Kentucky program was the brainchild of Lexington Bishop Stacy Sauls.
The diocese had a long history of offering summer camps for children,
but he thought the camps should focus on reading.

"Breaking the Silence: The Church Responds to Domestic Violence" from
Church Publishing, Inc., by Anne O. Weatherholt, 124 pages, paperback,
c. 2008, $16

[Church Publishing, Inc.] A handbook about domestic violence from a
spiritual perspective, and the only one of its kind, Breaking the
Silence contains important, action-oriented information about domestic
violence and its pervasiveness in society. Sections include "myths"
about domestic violence; a checklist to determine if a relationship is
potentially violent; clergy resources for counseling, worship, and
congregational outreach; rape; information for youth; and pages that can
be customized with local and national contact numbers, e-mail addresses,
and websites. Also includes questions for discussion and suggestions for
using the book for training or as a youth and adult education tool.

This resource is limited to adult abuse, as the subject of child abuse
is highly specialized and often includes many more laws and involvement
from local agencies that will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
