>From the moment it made its debut in late August 2008, Cape No.7 has been a box-office sensation across Taiwan. Currently, the movie is about to reach the NT $400 million threshold. From grannies who never bother with movies to Hollywood-only young movie-goers, Cape No.7 has attracted viewers of all ages in Taiwan who normally do not watch domestic movies.
In response to the warm reception the movie has received, Cape No.7 director Te-sheng Wei collected many stage props used during the filming of the movie and organized an Internet auction. He hopes that proceeds from the auction will help the needy. Besides stage props such as electric guitars, sunglasses, band t-shirts, pictures dating back 60 years, notebooks, and purses, one of the items auctioned off include a 300 page hand-written schedule book used during production to organize the filming of special-effects scenes. Inside this book, you will find the producer’s hand-written notes and some quick drawings made in pencil. So far, this hand-written schedule book has received 480 bids. All together, Wei gathered over 50 items for auction.
Te-sheng Wei’s hometown pastor in Yongkang city, Tainan, who also appeared on the movie set, urged believers to support the auction as it is for a good cause. Due to the movie’s popularity, Pastor Hsing-Chuan Hwang from Yongkang Presbyterian Church has suddenly become the most popular pastor in Taiwan. Pastor Hwang recalls his shock when Wei invited him to appear in the set because he believed that the pastor would fit the role like a glove. Pastor Hwang remembers Wei as a serious hard-worker who later moved to Taipei to further his career. He urged his congregation to pray for Wei shortly after receiving confirmation that the movie would start shooting. He knew that when it came to movies, the worst thing that can happen is for a movie to garner applause from movie critics while attracting only scant audiences at the box office.
Cape No.7 hopes to break the $400 million mark in the next few days. Pastor Hwang hopes that through Te-sheng Wei’s masterpiece, millions of people will be blessed. He urges those who have yet to see the movie to go see it. He says, “The plot rich with emotion. It is humorous and heart-warming. It is about different ethnic groups interacting with each other. It is definitely worth seeing.”
The website for the Internet auction for Cape No.7 is http://tw.user.bid.yahoo.com/tw/booth/cape7auction@kimo.com. Proceeds from the auction will go toward Taiwan World Vision’s disaster relief fund for aboriginal regions.
