>OPINION

>A theology for political participation

>By Ed Rodman

[Episcopal News Service] As a black Episcopal priest and a professor at
the Episcopal Divinity School [in Cambridge, Massachusetts], I have a
personal theology on political participation (of which voting is a
crucial part) that is a composite of my 48 years as a social activist
and my practical application of the theological training I received at
the Episcopal Theological School in the 1960s.

Briefly put, I believe that we are to take Jesus' admonition seriously
that we are "to be in the world but not of the world" and practice our
faith with the gentleness of doves and the wisdom of serpents. It is my
belief therefore that Christians are called to be "conservatives whose
status quo has yet to be achieved." No matter what the societal
arrangements under which we may find ourselves at any given time, they
would all fall short of the values of the reign of God and therefore
lead to exclusion, oppression and the unequal distribution of resources.

As a person committed to non-violent direct action I fully endorse the
notion that Christians have an obligation to oppose unjust laws,
malevolent practices (i.e. racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism and
classism), and oppression of all kinds which denies our common humanity
and creates victims in every case.

Project kneeler: Needlework beautifies Arkansas cathedral

>By Episcopal Life staff

[Episcopal Life] Fingers are busy at the cathedral and in congregations
throughout the Diocese of Arkansas.

In a project designed to encourage a deeper relationship between each
church, Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock, Arkansas, has launched
"Project Kneeler."

"We are stitching new needlepoint kneelers for the cathedral," said
Rebecca Hubener of the cathedral's Needlepoint Guild, "and engaging each
of the congregations to help us by sponsoring one kneeler that will
honor that church."

"Feasting on the Word: Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary -- Year
B, Volume 1, Advent through Transfiguration" from Westminster John Knox
Press, edited by David L. Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor, 463 page s,
hardcover, c. 2008, $39.95

[Westminster John Knox Press] This new lectionary commentary series
offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market today.
For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays -- one
each on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical
challenges of the text. They might focus on the Gospel text, for
instance, by reading all four essays provided for that text, or they
might explore connections between the Hebrew Bible, Psalm, Gospel, and
Epistle texts by reading the theological essays for each one.

Each lectionary year will consist of four volumes, one for the Advent
and Christmas season, one for Lent and Easter, and one for each half of
Ordinary Time. While the twelve volumes of teh series will follow the
pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an
index of biblical passages so that non-lectionary preachers may make use
of its contents.
