Archbishop of Canterbury spotlights challenges, priorities of
'imperfect' communion

Williams addresses Church of England's General Synod

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service -- London] Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan
Williams has told members of the Church of England's General Synod
that while the Anglican Communion may be "imperfect ... we
unmistakably want to find a way of holding on to what we have and
'intensifying' it."

Williams' message came as part of his February 10 presidential address
as the Church of England's main legislative body convened for a
five-day meeting at Church House in Westminster, London.

Underscoring "the significance of a climate in which every participant
is guaranteed a hearing," Williams opened his address with some
reflections about last summer's Lambeth Conference and last week's
primates meeting.

Primates communiqué, Windsor report are 'study in contrasts,' House of
Deputies president says

[Episcopal News Service] Bonnie Anderson, president of the Episcopal
Church's House of Deputies, said in a statement February 9 that the
recent communiqué from the Anglican Communion's Primates meeting
stands in contrast to a report from the Windsor Continuation Group
released the same day.

Anderson said that the primates' message "adopted both a new tone and
a broader set of theological concerns" that was markedly different
from previous communiqué which she said often set "deadlines, made
veiled threats and attempted unwelcome incursions into the affairs of
the Anglican Consultative Council and member churches." By contrast,
the continuation group's report, Anderson said, was a "step backward"
and reflected a yearning for "for greater ecclesial centralization
achieved by concentrating power in the hands of bishops and
archbishops, further marginalizing the laity and diminishing the
influence of member churches in the common life of our communion."

Anderson noted that the continuation group said there is what it
called an "ecclesial deficit" in the communion and she said the group
proposed to remedy it by strengthening the three of the four
instruments of communion: the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primates
Meeting and the decennial Lambeth Conference of bishops.

Presiding Bishop joins call for review of U.S. policy on landmines and
cluster munitions

>By Joe Bjordal

[Episcopal News Service] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori has joined with leaders of 67 national organizations
in calling on President Barack Obama to reconsider United States
opposition to global treaties prohibiting the use, transfer and
production of landmines and cluster munitions.

In a letter, delivered on February 10, the leaders called on the
president to launch a review of the past administration's decisions to
"stand outside of" two international treaties: the Convention on
Cluster Munitions, completed and signed by 95 countries in December
2008, and the Mine Ban Treaty, signed by all but 39 countries in the
world in March 1999.

"In the Company of Christ: A Pilgrimage Through Holy Week" from Church
Publishing, Inc., by Benedicta Ward, 84 pages, paperback, c. 2005, $12

[Church Publishing, Inc.] With In the Company Christ, Sister Benedicta
Ward, Carmelite nun and church historian, guides us through the
history of Christian procession. Through the practice of pilgrimage we
live the resurrection, and join a wide Christian community. Pilgrimage
is a way into the eternal Jerusalem, a way into the Gospel. Over
centuries of practice, the rituals and traditions of pilgrimage have
evolved.

Using the Holy Days of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter as her
signposts, Sr. Ward takes us through time. Among our stops is ancient
Palestine, where we explore the writings of the 4th Spanish nun,
Egeria. Leaving Jerusalem, we cross time and arrive in the rituals of
medieval English monasticism. Finally, we end where we began, with a
journey into the Trinity.

By taking part in this historical procession, we find a clear line of
continuity between ancient and medieval times, and our own modernity.
In the Company Christ is a journey for an individual or for a parish,
to be taken during Lent or any time of the church year.
