World-renowned author and Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas L. Friedman sparked discussion all across Taiwan with his recent book entitled “Hot, Flat, and Crowded”. During the recent YWCA 60th anniversary celebration in Taipei, many entrepreneurs and members from the media gathered to discuss “Green Wisdom”. The seminar focused on how the current financial crisis could be an opportunity to promote environmentalism.

Leaders from YWCA in Taipei recounted the early days of the organization when it set up milk booths to help the poorest in society because it felt compelled to serve those in need. Taiwanese society has evolved a great deal since then, and one of the primary social concerns now is the environment and global warming. This concern requires government agencies and business organizations to cooperate with each other, which is why the YWCA is now establishing a ministry called Corporate Social Responsibility.

The organization held a ceremony to mark its anniversary and the beginning of Corporate Social Responsibility on February 20th and guest speakers at the event included Taiwanese Vice-President Vincent Siew.

The event received full support from the Ministry of Interior and a spokesperson for the ministry wished all married couples a happy marriage and urged them to focus on building strong family relationships.
