EASTERN OREGON: Rivera to serve as assisting bishop

>By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service] Bishop Edna Bavi "Nedi" Rivera has been
appointed assisting bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Oregon effective
March 1, the diocesan standing committee announced.

She will become provisional bishop after a diocesan electing
convention, which is still being planned, according to the Rev. Canon
Lee Kiefer, diocesan canon for transition. "It hasn't been definitely
decided yet, but we have two or three options, including waiting until
our regular diocesan convention in October, which many people feel
would be the best stewardship [most cost-effective]," he said.

Episcopal Divinity School cuts tuition to help students during recession

[EDS] Concerned about the effect of the nation's economy on the
ability of prospective students to access a theological education, the
Board of Trustees of Episcopal Divinity School voted to roll back
tuition from $16,500 to $12,500 for masters of divinity and master of
arts in theological studies for the school's fall and spring program.
The cuts will be effective at the Cambridge, Massachusetts seminary

>OPINION

>The American sin

>By Solange De Santis

[Episcopal News Service] In the manner of editorials, this one is
about to make a sweeping statement: Americans don't like to think
about sin, especially when the question is whether there is a
particular kind of sin that possibly could be identified as part of
the American character.

Of the traditional seven, pride is certainly in the running -- the
blind, boastful pride that tramples another's sensibility. In its most
extreme, the feeling is that, while the nation is not quite completely
blameless, it is a good and great force in the world, bringer of light
and democracy, liberator of oppressed peoples. At home, the virtues of
capitalism and political freedom produce the best country there could
possibly be, an example to all.

While pride takes part in the race, the winner, however, has to be greed.
