African Church leaders lobby British Government to help end LRA crisis
in Sudan

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] Anglican church leaders from the Sudan, Uganda
and the north eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
have sent a petition to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown appealing
for his government's assistance in ending the brutal attacks by the
so-called Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

In their letter, the leaders, whose churches have been affected since
December 2008 by repeated LRA attacks that have claimed thousands of
lives and forced many more to flee their homes, called on the British
government "to put diplomatic pressure on the LRA leaders, leaders in
Sudan, Uganda and Congo, and leaders of the U.N. peacekeeping missions
... to do more to bring an end to the brutal attacks on unarmed
civilians by the LRA, which have seen many Congolese and Sudanese towns
swamped with refugees and displaced people since December."

The letter was signed by Archbishop Daniel Deng of the Episcopal Church
of Sudan, Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi of the Anglican Church of Uganda,
and Bishop George Ande of the Congolese Diocese of Aru.

"Ballots for Belva: The True Story of a Woman's Race for the Presidency"
from Harry N. Abrams, Inc., written by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen,
illustrated by Courtney A. Martin, 32 pages, hardcover, for ages 4-8, c.
2008, $16.95

[Harry N. Abrams, Inc.] In 1884, when men were the only people allowed
to vote in national elections, Belva Lockwood took a bold but legal
step: she ran for president! Women did not have the same rights as men,
but Belva went on undeterred -- and she got votes! Her run for office
was based on experience and merit: unlike many women of the time, she
went to college, then to law school, and even argued cases before the
Supreme Court.

Though her campaign was difficult, Belva never wavered in her commitment
to equality, earning the respect of many fellow citizens. A little-known
but richly deserving American historical figure, Belva is an inspiration
for modern-day readers. Despite all the changes in society since Belva's
time, there is still a lot to fight for, and Belva shows the way. The
book also includes a glossary and a timeline of women's suffrage events.

Book of Common Prayer contained "obey" language in the marriage service.
