>by Frank Imhoff, ELCA News Service

Roanoke College, Salem, Va., will host a reception March 31 for
Stephanie A. Doyle, the 2009 Virginia Teacher of the Year. Doyle
is a sixth-grade history teacher at James Breckinridge Middle
School, Roanoke, Va. She is a member of the National Museum of
the American Indian, Organization of American Historians,
Virginia Council for Social Studies and Civil War Preservation
Trust. In 1999 Doyle earned a bachelor's degree in psychology
from Roanoke College, one of 28 colleges and universities of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

A committee that included representatives of professional and
educational associations, the business community and the 2008
Virginia Teacher of the Year selected Doyle last fall from the
eight Virginia 2009 Regional Teachers of the Year. The
commonwealth's program is coordinated by the Virginia Department
of Education. "Stephanie Doyle is a shining example of Virginia's
many highly qualified, caring teachers who challenge and inspire
their students," said Patricia I. Wright, Virginia's
superintendent of public instruction. "Her students are the
benefactors of her passion for U.S. history."

The National Teacher of the Year Program is a project of the
Council of Chief State School Officers. The President of the
United States introduces the National Teacher of the Year each
April in a White House ceremony.
