UCCJ reaches out to Taiwan and reaffirms partnership

“The United Church of Christ in Japan is very concerned about the situation in Taiwan!” reported Presbyterian Church in Taiwan
(PCT) Moderator Leonard Lin (Lin Tsung-jeng) and General Secretary Andrew Chang upon returning from the 12th conference
between the PCT and the United Church of Christ in Japan (UCCJ) scheduled April 21~23.
According to reports, the UCCJ is very concerned about the state of affairs in Taiwan and has made clear that, following the spirit
of Article 9 in Japan’s constitution, it will continue to promote world peace and oppose the use of military force because it
compromises peace. UCCJ also added that it will not stand by and see Taiwanese people be deprived of their human rights.
Eleven delegates from the PCT participated in this year’s conference, including Lin, Chang, Clerk Chioh Lyiam-syan and other
delegates representing youth, seniors, and women ministries. Delegates had an opportunity to meet with their counterparts in Japan
>as well.
During the conference, UCCJ expressed deep concern about the state of affairs in Taiwan. Lin replied that China has not yet given
up on the right to use military force against Taiwan and the Ma administration’s China-leaning policies have increasingly endangered
>human rights and national autonomy in Taiwan.
According to Chang, JCCJ took note of these recent developments when signing their partnership agreement and incorporated
these concerns into their joint statement to demonstrate solidarity with the Taiwanese people. Besides signing the agreement and the
joint statement, both churches also shared about developments in their seniors, women, and youth ministries.
