Convention to consider justice and peace initiatives

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] The 76th General Convention this July will be
asked in various ways to continue the Episcopal Church's mission of
living out the baptismal covenant vow to "strive for justice and
peace."

Already-filed resolutions, most contained in the triennial reports of
the church's commissions, committees, agencies and boards, address
social justice issues and echo the baptismal promise to "respect the
dignity of every human being."

Leading the list of new domestic initiatives to be considered at the
convention in Anaheim, California, is one from the Executive Council's
Jubilee Advisory Committee to establish a program to alleviate
domestic poverty.

>DIOCESAN DIGEST

MINNESOTA: Native American, Hmong congregations seek to preserve
cultural identities

>By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service, Minneapolis] The Episcopal Church is
committed to sharing "the good news of Jesus in ways people can
understand and receive" within a variety of cultural contexts,
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori told gatherings of Native
American and Hmong Episcopalians during a May 14-17 visit to the
Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota.

On Saturday, she toured the Prairie Island Indian Reservation and met
with a group of about 25 clergy and lay leaders at the Messiah
Episcopal Indian Mission in Welch, about 50 miles south of
Minneapolis. Among other things, they asked about "the circle of
advice that is being consulted for decisions in and about native
ministries" as well as appropriate funding sources for it.

>MISSION

Rogation Sunday fosters environmental awareness

>By Lynette Wilson

[Episcopal News Service] Care for the earth and its resources, more
specifically, water, formed the theme for this year's Rogation Sunday
services held May 17 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul
(www.stpaulscathedralvt.org) in Burlington, Vermont, a port city
located on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain.

"It's the day our parish celebrates the earth. We don't use the
secular Earth Day," said Sylvia Knight, coordinator of St. Paul's
earth care ministry, in a telephone interview. "It's important for the
church to bring earth care matters into our liturgy; if our liturgy
doesn't address the natural world around us, we won't be thinking
about it."
