Bulletin insert series to focus on General Convention

[Episcopal News Service] Beginning on May 31, a series of six
Episcopal Life Weekly bulletin inserts will focus on the 76th General
Convention of The Episcopal Church, which will take place July 8 - 17
in Anaheim, California.

The first insert, titled 'Living the Questions,' outlines the
beginnings of the The Episcopal Church, a story that didn't really
begin with Henry VIII, but reached a major turning point when the
Tudor monarch broke with Rome to form the Church of England, which was
then carried to the New World by settlers.

Other inserts in the series will include information about the
structure and polity of the Church and descriptions of how General
Convention is run, as well as issues that are likely to come before
the triennial meeting this summer.

The bulletin insert for May 31 may be downloaded at

>MISSION

Service members, families connect 'across the miles'

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal Life] Wars create a distance that can't be measured merely
by counting the miles between battlefield and home.

The distance separating service members and their families and friends
can be filled with fear, anxiety and experiences too difficult to talk
about. The time away changes those who go and those who stay.

A new three-part series of Episcopal Church resources titled Across
the Miles is designed to help people bridge all of the distances
created by military service. It includes material for congregations,
service members, adult family members and children.

Image Gallery: Saluting chaplains in the field

[Episcopal Life] After the end of the Civil War, American towns began
setting aside a day to honor fallen soldiers and visit and tend their
graves. The memorials coalesced into a commemoration of American
troops killed in all wars, first called Decoration Day and now
Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday in May (the 25th this
year).

In this image gallery, Episcopal Life honors the "padres" who minister
to soldiers, sailors, fliers and their families. Their "arms" are a
book, a cup and a table. They lend their skills, their prayers, their
blessings and their understanding to the living and sometimes to the
dying. They bring the word of God to the faithful and listen to those
who say they have no faith. Their "congregations" are often young and
diverse, and their service is essential.

>CATALYST

"Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television" from
Church Publishing, Inc., by Nadia Bolz-Weber, 165 pages, paperback, c.
2008, $17

[Church Publishing, Inc.] A book for everyone who's ever flipped past
the religious channel and thought, "I haven't the faintest clue what's
going on there," or "That church doesn't seem like my church at all,"
or even, "Wow, so that's what happened to Kirk Cameron." With the
personalities of Christian broadcasting constantly talking about every
major issue from abortion to culture to war, and given the amount of
influence they have on the political discourse in this country, the
more one understands about religious television, the more one
understands America's religious landscape.

On an average day, the largest religious broadcast channel in the
country reaches millions of viewers, featuring programming from
figures such as Benny Hinn, T.D. Jakes, Pat Robertson, Paul and Jan
Crouch, Jesse Duplantis, Joel Osteen, and others. Yet, despite its
presence in well over 50 million households, many people have little
concept of what kind of faith happens there.

The author, a Lutheran seminarian and former stand-up comic who had
never before watched religious broadcasting, spent 24 hours immersing
herself in the messages and culture of religious television. Joined by
guest viewers at various points in the day, including a rabbi,
Unitarian minister, her 8-year-old daughter, and others, and augmented
by running count of all of the biblical verses used and total cost of
various donations solicited and products shilled through the day, the
author chronicles this huge - but unknown to many - area of religious
culture.
