Se tienen que escuchar a las Iglesias reformadas en los pasillos
del poder 

Ya es tiempo de que las Iglesias reformadas hagan escuchar sus
voces en los espacios donde los poderosos toman decisiones,
declara un dirigente de iglesia colombiano. 

“La iglesia tiene que proclamar en los pasillos del poder que no
somos los dueños de la riqueza del mundo sino únicamente sus
intendentes” sostiene Helis Barraza Díaz, responsable de la
Iglesia Presbiteriana de Colombia, entrevistado en Ginebra, donde
se está reuniendo la red de la Alianza por la Justicia Económica
y la Vida en la Tierra, uno de los programas de la Alianza
Reformada Mundial (ARM). 

“Dios es el dios de la vida, de la creación y de la economía.”

Refiriéndose a las reuniones que llevarán a cabo en Ginebra les
Comités ejecutivos de la Alianza Reformada Mundial y del Consejo
Ecuménico Reformado (REC), a partir de mañana, jueves 21 de mayo,
Helis Barraza opina que “ahora es el momento preciso para que los
miembros de las dos organizaciones reflexionen acerca del
objetivo que como organización mundial se proponen alcanzar.”

El Sr. Barraza Díaz está convencido de que la respuesta no
consiste simplemente en encontrarse para aprender unos de otros y
compartir recursos. “Si no rendimos testimonio de lo que pasa en
el mundo, nada de esto tiene sentido”, declara.

Hoy en día, la Iglesia debe pregonar el mismo mensaje que tuvo
Pablo al dirigirse a las clases dominantes de Atenas, en el
primer siglo DC, cuando proclamó que el oro y la plata no eran
Dios, opina Barraza Díaz. Pero está consciente de que hay quienes
preferirían que las Iglesias no se inmiscuyan en asuntos
seculares.

“Si la Iglesia acepta el sistema global dominante, no ven ningún
problema. Pero si la Iglesia es profética y critica a ese
sistema, algunos miembros se sienten incómodos.”

El representante colombiano, que tiene una formación en economía
y administración, piensa que a pesar de ello, la ARM y el REC
deben recordarles a las Iglesias que ya están involucradas en el
mundo. 

“Tienen una relación con el poder,” insiste Barraza Díaz. “El
desafío para las Iglesias reside en definir qué es lo que quieren
hacer de esta relación.” 

Al planear su fusión para conformar la Comunión Mundial de
Iglesias Reformadas, en el 2010, el objetivo de la ARM y del REC
tiene que ser que se escuche la voz de la Iglesia en las esferas
del poder, tal y como Pablo lo hizo.

Esto es urgente, afirma Barraza Díaz. “El mundo se dirige hacia
la destrucción.  Alguien tiene que reaccionar y las Iglesias
tienen algo que decir al respecto.”

Reformed churches must be heard in the corridors of power

It is time for Reformed churches to be heard in the places where
the powerful make decisions, says a Colombian church leader. 

“The church must proclaim in the corridors of power that we are
not the owners of the world’s wealth but the managers,” Helis
Barraza Díaz said in an interview from Geneva where the Justice
Network of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) is
meeting. 

“God is the god of life, creation and the economy.”

Referring to meetings in Geneva later this week of the executive
committees of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and
the Reformed Ecumenical Council (REC), the head of the
Presbyterian Church of Colombia says the time is right for
members of the two organizations to reflect on the purpose of
global church organizations.  

Barraza Díaz believes the answer is not simply that the churches
meet to learn from each other and share resources.  “If we don’t
witness to the world, none of this has meaning,” he says.

Barraza Díaz believes that the church must deliver the same
message today that Paul did in speaking to the ruling class of
Athens in the first century AD when he proclaimed that silver and
gold objects were not God.  But he acknowledges that there are
those who would prefer the church not engage in secular matters.

“If the church accepts the dominant world system, there is no
problem.  But if the church is prophetic and criticizes that
system, we make some members uncomfortable.”

Still, the Colombian who was trained in economics and management
believes WARC and REC must remind the churches that they are
already involved in the world. 

“They have a relationship to power,” Barraza Díaz insists. “The
challenge to the churches lies in what to do with that
relationship.” 

As WARC and REC plan to merge in 2010 to form the World
Communion of Reformed Churches, their objective must be to find a
way to make the voices of the church heard in the places of power
as Paul did.  

Doing so is urgent, Barraza Díaz believes. “The world is heading
for destruction.  Someone must do something and the churches have
something to say.”
