Zimbabwe diocese breaks chains of dictatorship

Bakares' ministry prepares the way for Harare's resurrection

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service -- Berkeley, California] For Anglicans in the
Diocese of Harare Zimbabwe, Holy Week and Eastertide have been a time
of new beginnings, and interim Bishop Sebastian Bakare has a bag of
chains in his office as proof.

The chains, now broken, once locked the doors to the Harare cathedral
preventing Anglicans from worshipping in their church. Bakare led
worship in the cathedral on Easter Sunday for the first time since
coming to the diocese in December 2007. It was, he told Episcopal News
Service, "our resurrection Sunday."

That feeling of new life continues to deepen in the embattled diocese
that is recovering from the effects of Bishop Nolbert Kunonga's
episcopacy and finding ways to minister in a country being ruined by a
dictatorial president.

"Saints - A Year in Faith and Art" from Harry N. Abrams, Inc., by Rosa
Giorgi, 780 pages, hardcover, c. 2009, $19.95

[Harry N. Abrams, Inc.] This richly illustrated, unique volume
portrays more than 375 Catholic saints, arranged by the days of the
year on which each beatified figure is honored. The images range from
world-famous works of art by such masters as Caravaggio, Rubens,
Velázquez, and El Greco to more modern and lesser-known depictions.
Rosa Giorgi has chosen up to three saints for each day of the year and
has composed a brief accompanying description of each -- including
etymology of names, historical background, and occupations, cities,
and countries of patronage.

Encompassing angels and abbots, mystics and martyrs, priests and
prophets, virgins and visionaries, the exquisite saint portraits in
these pages will not only inspire Catholics -- making this an ideal
confirmation or Christmas gift -- but will also fascinate scholars and
art historians.
