Le message dâ??un théologien français du 16e siècle aborde la
question des conflits religieux dâ??aujourdâ??hui

Les leçons dâ??un théologien français né au 16e siècle en France
sâ??adressent directement à  un monde post-moderne affamé de
communautés pacifiques et unies, affirme le président dâ??un réseau
mondial dâ??Ã?glises protestantes.

Lors dâ??une conférence publique présentée le vendredi 22 mai à 
lâ??Université de la Sorbonne à  Paris, le président de
lâ??Alliance réformée mondiale (ARM) rappela que Calvin, un
pionnier de la réformation protestante, avait écrit « quâ??il
traverserait dix mers » sans hésiter si cela pouvait faire
avancer la cause de lâ??unité chrétienne. 

« Dans un monde et une �glise fragmentés, où plusieurs des
conflits les plus graves sont imputables à des antagonisme
religieux, Calvin a plus dâ??importance que jamais » affirma
Clifton Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick a exposé ses réflexions au cours de la célébration
du 500e anniversaire de la naissance du dirigeant de lâ??Ã?glise
réformée, Jean Calvin, et du 450e anniversaire de l´�glise
réformée de France. 

« Le défi ne consiste pas à simplement célébrer Calvin mais
plutôt à chercher à savoir ce que représenterait une
révolution calviniste au 21e siècle en France », déclara
Kirkpatrick.

A son avis, une révolution calviniste ne serait pas violente et
pourrait même impliquer de diriger un mouvement pour la paix basé
sur la justice en économie et sur la protection du monde
naturel.

Kirkpatrick souligne que Calvin avait souvent demandé aux
chrétiens réformés de France qui étaient persécutés à cause de
leur foi, de ne pas réagir de la même façon. 

â??Cet appel à  devenir des faiseurs de paix ne peut être plus
urgent aujourdâ??huiâ??, déclara Kirkpatrick. â??En tant que chrétiens
réformés nous sommes appelés à conduire différemment nos
communautés et en faire des démonstrations vivantes de
compassion, de justice et soutien mutuel.â?? 

Le président du Sénat français, Gérard Larcher, est attendu lors
de lâ??acte culminant les célébrations de lâ??anniversaire, et qui
coïncide avec la 102e réunion annuelle du Synode de lâ??Ã?glise
Réformée de France. 

Kirkpatrick sera accompagné par le secrétaire général de lâ??ARM,
Setri Nyomi, et par le président du Conseil Å?cuménique réformé
(REC), Peter Borgdorff.  En juin 2010 les deux organisations
Å?cuméniques mondiales vont fusionner pour devenir la
Communion mondiale dâ??Ã?glises réformées.

Message of 16th century French theologian addresses religious
conflicts today

The lessons of a 16th century theologian born in France speak
directly to a post-modern world hungry for peaceful and united
communities according to the president of a global network of
Protestant churches.

In a presentation to be delivered at a public event at the
Sorbonne University in Paris on Friday 22 May, the president of
the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) notes that Calvin,
a pioneer leader of the Protestant Reformation, once wrote that
he would eagerly â??cross ten seasâ?? if that would further the cause
of Christian unity.

â??In a fragmented world and fragmented church, where many of the
greatest conflicts are centred in religious difference, Calvin is
more relevant than ever,â?? Clifton Kirkpatrick says.

Kirkpatrick makes his remarks in an address celebrating the
500th birthday of the pioneer Reformed church leader, John
Calvin, and the 450th anniversary of the Reformed Church of
France. 

â??The challenge,â?? says Kirkpatrick, â??is not just to celebrate
Calvin but rather to seek what it might mean to lead a Calvinist
revolution in 21st century France.â??

Rather than being a violent revolution, Kirkpatrick suggests
that a Calvinist revolution might include leading a movement for
peace based on justice in the economy and on care for the natural
world. 

Kirkpatrick notes Calvin often admonished Reformed Christians in
France who were being persecuted for their faith not to respond
in kind.

â??This call to be peacemakers could not be more urgent than it is
today,â?? Kirkpatrick declares. â??As Reformed Christians, we are
called to lead in a different direction and make our communities
living demonstrations of compassion, justice and mutual support.â??

The president of the French Senate, Gérard Larcher, is expected
to attend the event marking the highpoint of the anniversary
celebrations planned to coincide with the 102nd annual meeting
Synod of the Reformed Church of France.

Kirkpatrick will be accompanied by WARCâ??s general secretary,
Setri Nyomi, and by the president of the Reformed Ecumenical
Council (REC), Peter Borgdorff.  In June 2010 the two global
ecumenical organizations will merge to form the World Communion
of Reformed Churches.
