Church responds to stabbing with prayer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS)—United Methodists in northeast Arkansas came together in prayer after a church secretary was stabbed and robbed in her office. The pastor and church members rushed to the hospital after Vickie Jo Mueller, 52, was stabbed twice in the chest and twice in the abdomen May 22 by a man who came into the office of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Jonesboro asking for gas money. And that night about 180 people — including pastors and members of other area United Methodist churches — gathered at St. Paul to pray some more. By May 26, Mueller’s vital signs were stable and she was in fair condition at the city’s St. Bernards Medical Center.

Faith leaders back immigration bill

WASHINGTON (UMNS)—The United Methodist Church’s social justice agency supports legislation that would reunite more than 300,000 legal immigrants with their families. The bill introduced May 20 by Democratic Sens. Robert Menendez, Kristen Gillibrand, Edward Kennedy and Charles Schumer is designed to increase immigration eligibility and speed up a process that can take a decade or more. “The Reuniting Families Act is a crucial and necessary part of comprehensive immigration reform that all people of faith can and should support as a way to honor and uphold the value of families,” said Bill Mefford, executive with the United Methodist Board of Church and Society.

United Methodist pastors acquitted in protest

PHILADELPHIA (UMNS)—Two United Methodist pastors were among 12 gun violence protesters acquitted May 27 on charges related to a January demonstration when they blocked the doors at Colosimo’s Gun Center. The Rev. David Tatg enhorst and the Rev. Jim McIntire are members of Heeding God’s Call, a grassroots campaign to end gun violence in Philadelphia. Colosimo’s Gun Center is listed as one of the five worst gun shops in the U.S. in terms of guns sold and then recovered from crime, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The judge found the members of the group, many of them clergy, not guilty of conspiracy, defiant trespassing, disorderly conduct, and obstructing a highway, all misdemeanors. Before the trial, a prayer service in support of the protesters was held at the Arch Street United Methodist Church.

Service project builds homes in Honduras

CARMICHAEL, Calif. (UMNS)—The United Methodist Committee on Relief is supporting a two-year grant for the Sierra Service Project of Carmichael, Calif., to build 12 homes for families in need in Honduras, where hundreds of thousands of families live in substandard rural homes vulnerable to flooding, mudslides and fire. The United Methodist agency is providing building materials and funds to hire local labor to supervise the work. The Sierra Service Project, an incorporated agency of the United Methodist California-Nevada and California-Pacific annual conferences, enlists North American youth and adult volunteers to assist in building homes in Honduras. For more information about volunteering with the Sierra Service Project team in the summer of 2010, visit their Web site <http://www.sierraserviceproject.org/> . Donations can be made to the Sierra Service Project, UMCOR Advance No. 982185, or to Central America Emergency, UMCOR Advance No. 501300. Giving information is available at www.umcor.org <http://www.umcor.org> .

Book features writings of Colorado activist

DENVER (UMNS)—The Rev. Donald Messer, former president of Iliff School of Theology, has edited a collection of the writings of the Rev. Paul E. Murphy, a United Methodist pastor and longtime civil rights activist in Colorado. Murphy, who died on Oct. 8, 2008, at age 71, was one of the first mainline Protestant ministers to fight for the rights of gays in the church. Messer, a longtime friend, said Murphy never intended for his writings to be published, but he believes Murphy’s reflections “have value for the living.” Proceeds from the book, “Cherishing Life & Love: Reflections of Paul Murphy,” which can be ordered at www.cherishinglife.com <http://www.cherishinglife.com> , will be used to support vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in Kenya.
