tough economic times

Recognizing that it is meeting in one of the hardest hit states of the
current recession, UCC General Synod 27 declared itself "in
solidarity" with the people of the state of Michigan and those
throughout the country who "struggle and are struggling" in the
current economy.

In a resolution of witness, adopted unanimously at their meeting in
Grand Rapids, UCC delegates pledged to keep the people of Michigan in
their prayers and asked national and local church bodies and
congregations to "undertake renewed efforts to envision, encourage,
support and strengthen" their support programs serving those affected
by the economic downturn.

Areas impacted include financial ministries, food banks and financial
counseling. Delegates also called for an increase in "direct and
charitable actions" as well as advocacy for programs to serve affected
individuals and families.
