Cookie count keeps climbing

A General Synod tradition continues here in Michigan as the host
conference rolls out the dough, baking and buying cookies for
delegates and visitors. And the rabbits multiplying at on Friday
morning are no match for the cookies proliferating in DeVos Gallery D.

Nancy Westcott of First Congregational UCC in Battle Creek, Mich., is
the General Synod Cookie Coordinator, a position requiring
extraordinary skills in organization, time management and good humor.
Since December, she and her committee have been contacting churches
throughout the Michigan conference through newsletters, email, and
phone calls to generate enough support to provide this traditional
snack to hungry delegates and visitors.

Cookies started arriving in Grand Rapids on Friday from more than 100
Michigan churches. Westcott estimates somewhere between 4,000 and
5,000 dozen cookies in total will make their way to DeVos.

Based on Saturday's registration count, that's about 17 cookies to be
consumed by each delegate and visitor by Tuesday evening! Don't worry
about gluttony; leftover cookies will be sent to local food banks and shelters.

Cookies are available throughout the Convention Center and will be on
delegate tables during plenary sessions. Most are the traditional
varieties of chocolate chip, peanut butter and sugar cookies. Special
cookies, such as sugar-free and nut-free, are also available on
request by asking at the Cookie Room. These special cookies are kept
on a table near the back of the room. The sign says "No Nuts," but
Westcott says it only applies to the cookies; any nut is welcome at Synod.

This Synod features the debut of the "Comma" cookie. This sugar
cookie, pressed into the shape of our familiar denomination
punctuation, is the creation of the kitchen at Westcott's church in
Battle Creek. Comma cutters can be seen in the Cookie Room (ask how
you can take one home.)
