>PCT wary of China-US talks in November

>Reported by Lin Yi-ying

>Written by Lydia Ma

U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit China this November and meet with top

Chinese officials. It is unclear whether Taiwan will be one of the discussion topics and if so,

what will be discussed. What concerns most Taiwanese at this point is whether talks

between Chinese and US leaders will compromise Taiwan’s national sovereignty.

To make known Taiwanese people’s concerns to US leaders, the Presbyterian Church in

Taiwan (PCT) will hold a forum on US, China, and Taiwan relations on July 16~17 and invite

international relations experts to share their views. After the forum, a letter addressed to

President Obama will be drafted to urge him to safeguard Taiwan’s democracy and future

and avoid compromising the rights of 23 million Taiwanese people in exchange for favors

>from China.

According to PCT General Assembly Moderator Leonard Lin, all policies advocated by

current Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou since taking office last year have tended to favor

China at the expense of Taiwanese people and the future of Taiwan as a sovereign country.

Furthermore, US leaders have been silent on Taiwan’s predicament – a troubling sign that

Obama’s position on the future of Taiwan is unclear.

Due to these circumstances and to remain faithful to its religious convictions, the PCT must

speak out and remind the world about the rights of Taiwanese people.

According to reports, this forum will feature Taiwan Administrative Law Association Director

Cheng Jung-mo, Friends of Lee Teng-hui Association Secretary-General Lin Chih-sheng,

former Secretary of Defense Tsai Ming-shian and more. These speakers will speak on

topics such as “Is there a new path for Taiwanese people?” and “Is there a way out for

>Taiwanese people?”

PCT leaders such as former General Secretaries C.M. Kao and William Lo will also attend

>the forum.
