>Global crises get convention's attention

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] Support for troubled and besieged communities
in Haiti, Honduras, Pakistan and Sudan, as well as a call for an end
to the blockade in Cuba, were among international concerns addressed
by General Convention at its July 8-17 meeting in Anaheim, California.

While convention-goers found unanimity on most action concerning
global peace and justice issues, the bishops rejected a resolution on
Israel/Palestine, with opponents calling for a more balanced approach.

>Farmers put churches on the map

>By Lynette Wilson

[Episcopal News Service] Drew and Joan Norman started growing
vegetables on their farm in White Hall, Maryland, in 1985 and
eventually One Straw Farm became the state's largest organic vegetable
farm, selling wholesale to up-market grocers including Whole Foods and
Dean & Deluca.

"But it wasn't really profitable," Joan Norman said, in a telephone
interview.

"Joy in Disguise - Meeting Jesus in the Dark Times" from Church
Publishing, Inc., by Edward S. Little, 151 pages, paperback, c. 2009,
$18

[Church Publishing, Inc.] How can Paul rejoice when he's got nothing
to rejoice about? How can he talk about joy when he's in prison? This
book follows Paul as he writes to his friends in Philippi, helping us
to understand his experience of joy as a totally consuming emotion.
Paul highlights four reasons why joy fills his heart: because of the
Gospel partnership he shares with his friends in Philippi; because of
the unity that they experience in Christ; because of their confidence
in Jesus; and because God has given them peace beyond understanding.
These themes correspond with the four chapters of the letter, and form
the organizing principle of this book.

"Bishop Ed Little's wonderful and rich meditation on St. Paul's letter
to the Philippians is an outstanding commentary on the theme of joy in
all circumstances of life." -- Lord Carey of Clifton. Archbishop of
Canterbury, 1991-2002
