Northern Michigan episcopal election fails to receive required consents

[Episcopal News Service] Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori on
July 27 notified the standing committee of the Diocese of Northern
Michigan that the necessary consents to the ordination and consecration
of the Rev. Kevin Thew Forrester as bishop were not received within the
prescribed time period and therefore his election was "null and void."

In Thew Forrester's case, standing committees had until July 19 and
bishops with jurisdiction had until July 25.

>Canterbury reflects on General Convention

>By ENS staff

[Episcopal News Service] Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has
offered some reflections on the Episcopal Church's General Convention,
which was held July 8-17 in Anaheim, California.

Williams, who attended convention for the first two days and met with a
cross section of the Episcopal Church, said in his July 27 reflections,
"No one could be in any doubt about the eagerness of the bishops and
deputies of the Episcopal Church at the General Convention to affirm
their concern about the wider Anglican Communion." However, Williams
noted "that a realistic assessment of what convention has resolved does
not suggest that it will repair the broken bridges into the life of
other Anglican provinces; very serious anxieties have already been
expressed."

California court ruling favors Episcopal Church and Diocese of San
Joaquin

>By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service] After months of deliberation, a California
Superior Court judge in Fresno has rejected a breakaway group's attempts
to remove the Diocese of San Joaquin from the Episcopal Church and
affirmed Bishop Jerry Lamb as the leader of the diocese.

"It is beyond dispute that the Episcopal Church is a hierarchical
church," concluded Judge Adolfo M. Corona when issuing his July 21
ruling. He rejected such arguments by defendants, including former
bishop John-David Schofield, that the hierarchical nature of the church
is something to be determined on a "case by case basis."

>Listen to all voices

>By Solange De Santis

[Episcopal Life] Could anyone venture a guess at the number of words
spoken in public forums during General Convention? One would count
testimony at dozens of committee hearings, debate in open legislative
sessions in the House of Deputies and House of Bishops, sermons at the
daily Eucharists, speeches and talks at dozens of events.
