Disadvantaged children participate in multicultural summer camp

To give disadvantaged children from immigrant families living in  remote areas an

opportunity to experience different cultures during this summer  vacation, Eden

Social Welfare Foundation invited volunteers from universities in  Canada, Korea,

Panama, Paraguay, India, Nigeria, and Taiwan to organize a  multicultural camp.

The camp was divided into three segments and was held at various  locations in

>Tainan and Chiayi counties.

A final presentation was held at Lu-Man Presbyterian Church in  Chiayi on July

19th and children showed off what they had learned during the camp  when they

gave a presentation using bells and percussion instruments.

This multicultural camp lasting 21 days was made possible through  cooperation

between Eden Foundation and several churches from Tainan, Chiayi,  and Taipei

>presbyteries.

Children learned to love and respect others and themselves through  learning new

songs from different countries and new ways to greet one another,  taking music

lessons, and participating in arts and crafts seminars. Their  perspectives also

matured as they mingled with volunteers from different countries.

Mothers who had recently immigrated to Taiwan were also invited to  the

multicultural camp to make presentations about their  country’s culture so that

>children could learn about other countries.

According to one Eden Foundation leader, the recent economic  meltdown has

prevented many people from loving and reaching out to others. Eden  Foundation

and volunteers from many countries hope this exchange of cultures  will enrich the

lives of these children, create an environment of respect and love  for them, and

>instill good values in them.
