PCT joins relief efforts after Typhoon Morakot

>Reported by Lin Yi-ying

>Written by Lydia Ma

The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) has mobilized people and resources

to support relief efforts in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot which devastated

southern Taiwan. The PCT created “88 Flood Rescue and Rebuild Action Plan”,

headed by Associate General Secretary Lim Hong-tiong. The plan helped

establish rescue stations in Taimali, Pingtung, Rukai, Alishan, Tainan, Nantou,

>and Paiwan.

Lyim and PCT Church and Society Committee Secretary Chang Meng-yi will

lead PCT rebuilding efforts. The PCT has already issued a pastoral letter urging

churches to pray and offer financial assistance toward rebuilding efforts.

According to PCT General Secretary Andrew Chang, the devastation brought by

Typhoon Morakot is comparable to damages Taiwan sustained in 921

Earthquake in 1999. PCT General Assembly staff have already organized one-

day donations and set up rescue stations in many areas devastated by the

>typhoon.

Lyim urged President Ma to keep in mind that rescue efforts must go hand in

hand with rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Morakot and emphasis must be

placed on preventing an outbreak of diseases through adequate sanitation. The

government must strive to prevent possible epidemics and stop relegating its

responsibilities to private organizations or relying on private sectors to fulfill tasks

>that belong to government agencies.

To help residents from affected regions obtain medical help, the PCT sought

help from affiliated organizations such as Mackay Memorial Hospital Taitung

branch, Changhua Christian Hospital, and Sinlau Hospital, and asked these

organizations to contribute financially as well as send medical teams to assist

>rescue efforts.
