Pope announces special provisions to accept former Anglicans in Roman
Catholic Church

>By ENS staff

[Episcopal News Service] His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has announced
his plans to allow provisions that would accept groups of former
Anglicans who wish to convert to the Roman Catholic Church, according
to an Oct. 20 press release from The Vatican.

The press release announced the preparation of an Apostolic
Constitution that would allow such converts to enter full communion
with the Catholic Church while preserving elements of Anglican
spirituality and liturgy. Under the terms of the Apostolic
Constitution, the release said, "pastoral oversight and guidance will
be provided for groups of former Anglicans through a Personal
Ordinariate, whose Ordinary will usually be appointed from among
former Anglican clergy."

In a statement from the Episcopal Church, Bishop Christopher Epting,
ecumenical and interfaith officer, said that the announcement
"reflects what the Roman Catholic Church, through its acceptance of
Anglican rite parishes, has been doing for some years more informally
... We are in dialogue with the archbishop's office and will, in the
coming days, continue to explore the full implications of this in our
ecumenical relations."

The report, titled 'Around One Table,' outlines work done by a team of
independent researchers who used survey responses from a broad swathe
of Episcopal clergy and laypeople to identify particular beliefs and
attitudes that are held in common by most church members.

The online giving program is a new feature of Episcopal Church
websites that allows members to donate to specific programs and funds.

"A Paradise Built in Hell - The Extraordinary Communities that Arise
in Disaster" from Penguin Group, by Rebecca Solnit, 353 pages,
hardcover, c. 2009, $27.95

[Penguin Group] Why is it that in the aftermath of a disaster --
whether manmade or natural -- people suddenly become altruistic,
resourceful, and brave? What makes the newfound communities and
purpose many find in the ruins and crises after disaster so joyous?
And what does this joy reveal about ordinarily unmet social desires
and possibilities?

In A Paradise Built in Hell, award-winning author Rebecca Solnit
explores these phenomena, looking at major calamities from the 1906
earthquake in San Francisco through the 1917 explosion that tore up
Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, 9/11, and
Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She examines how disaster throws
people into a temporary utopia of changed states of mind and social
possibilities, as well as looking at the cost of the widespread myths
and rarer real cases of social deterioration during crisis. This is a
timely and important book from an acclaimed author whose work
consistently locates unseen patterns an meanings in broad cultural
histories.
