Public response to Calvin Jubilee exceeds expectations

Celebrations in 2009 of the 500th anniversary of the birth of
the Protestant reformer, John Calvin, were a resounding success
according to an assessment by the international committee which
coordinated Calvin09 Jubilee activities. 

“The results exceeded our expectations,” says the head of the
International Patronage Committee, Clifton Kirkpatrick.

Branded by an attention-grabbing logo and website, the Calvin09
Jubilee year attracted worldwide attention and drew a far higher
level of interest from the general public than expected.

“This year has both re-connected Reformed Christians to their
roots and to each other,” Kirkpatrick declares. “The focus on
Calvin has led many Reformed Christians to a new appreciation of
their heritage and their connections with one another. We no
longer felt the need to apologize for Calvin but rather found
much in his thoughts, his actions and his legacy that is truly
life-giving for our time.”

Kirkpatrick, who serves as President of the World Alliance of
Reformed Churches, says many American members of the Reformed
church movement noted striking similarities between current
political priorities in the United States and Calvin’s social
agenda: immigration, health care, and economic justice.

The economic and financial crisis also helped spread the church
reformer’s ideas about economic and social ethics notes Thomas
Wipf of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches.  

Roland Benz, responsible for Jubilee projects organized by the
Protestant Church of Geneva, affirms: “Something happened during
this year, in the media as well as among the public, which went
beyond church circles. The caricature of Calvin was challenged.”

“The Calvin09 year succeeded in bringing Reformed parishes
closer to their Reformer,” says Achim Detmers, responsible for
Jubilee activities in Germany.

The Jubilee showed Calvin’s impact has travelled well beyond
Europe. Special events and publications marked the diffusion of
Calvin’s writing and ideas from China to South Africa to
Argentina.  

“Our deepest hope is that the Calvin09 Jubilee will be just the
beginning of a new appreciation and rediscovery of the legacy of
Calvin which has the potential to renew our churches and our
world as we move into the future,” says Kirkpatrick.  “We have
laid a solid foundation during this Jubilee year and can look
forward to making a fresh contribution to broader ecumenical
discussions.”

Plans are now underway to redevelop the Jubilee internet site

portal for news and research into the impact of John Calvin’s
legacy.

Schlussbilanz für das Jubiläumsjahr calvin09 übersteigt
Erwartungen

Die Feierlichkeiten zum 500. Geburtstag des Reformators Johannes
Calvin waren ein grosser Erfolg, bestätigt das internationale
Patronatskomitee des Jubiläumsjahres calvin09.
„Die Schlussbilanz übersteigt unsere Erwartungen“, so der
Präsident des Patronatskomitees, Clifton Kirkpatrick, der
gleichzeitig auch Präsident des Reformierten Weltbundes ist. „Der
Fokus auf Calvin hat viele reformierte Christen ihr Erbe und ihre
Verbindungen zueinander wieder neu schätzen lernen lassen. Wir
entschuldigen uns nicht mehr für Calvin, wir haben viele Aspekte
in seinen Gedanken und Taten gefunden, die wahrhaft
lebensspendend für unsere Zeit sind.“

Die Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise habe die Aktualität der
Sozialethik Calvins erneut in Erinnerung gerufen, so Thomas Wipf,
Vizepräsident des Patronatskomitees calvin09 und Präsident des
Schweizerischen Evangelischen Kirchenbundes. Dieser habe sich in
„unermüdlichem sozialpolitischen Einsatz“ für eine Regulierung
des aufkeimenden Kapitalismus zum Wohl aller eingesetzt. Viele
amerikanische Mitglieder der Reformierten Kirche hätten
„deutliche Übereinstimmungen“ zwischen den aktuellen
politischen Prioritäten in den USA und der Sozialagenda Calvins
festgestellt, so Kirkpatrick weiter. Dazu gehörten Immigration,
Gesundheitsvorsorge und wirtschaftliche Gerechtigkeit.

Der Verantwortliche für die calvin09-Feierlichkeiten der Genfer
Protestantischen Kirche Roland Benz bestätigt: „Etwas ist in
diesem Jahr geschehen, sowohl in den Medien als auch in der
Öffentlichkeit über die kirchlichen Kreise hinaus. Die
Karikatur Calvins wurde nicht nur herausgefordert, sondern
verändert.“

„Das Jahr calvin09 brachte die reformierten Kirchgemeinden näher
zu ihrem Reformator“, resümiert Achim Detmers, Verantwortlicher
für die Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten in Deutschland.

Das Jubiläumsjahr hat in den verschiedenen Kulturen und Sprachen
die Wirkung Calvins zum Ausdruck gebracht. Von China bis
Argentinien, von Kuba bis Südafrika genauso wie in Japan, Italien
und Polen haben die Kirchen mit Veranstaltungen und Publikationen
die weltweite Verbreitung Calvins Schriften und Ideen
eindrucksvoll belegt.

„Unsere grosse Hoffnung ist, das Jahr calvin 09 möge erst der
Anfang eines neuen Zugangs zu Calvin sein. Ein Wiederentdecken
seines Erbes, das unsere Kirchen und unsere Welt auf dem Weg in
die Zukunft verändern kann“, so Kirkpatrick. „Wir haben mit dem
Jubiläumsjahr ein gutes Fundament gelegt, mit dem wir neu zur
ökumenischen Diskussion beitragen können.“
Ausgestattet mit einem packenden Logo und einer viersprachigen
Internetseite erzeugte das Jahr calvin09 weltweite
Aufmerksamkeit. Die viersprachige Internetseite www.calvin09.org
( http://www.calvin09.org/ )soll nun als Informations- und
Wissensportal zu Calvin weitergeführt werden.

Positivo balance final del Comité Patrocinador para el Jubileo
de Calvino 2009

Las celebraciones del 500 aniversario del natalicio del
Reformador Juan Calvino fueron un gran éxito, según confirma el
Comité Patrocinador del Jubileo de Calvino 2009.

„El balance final sobrepasa nuestras expectativas“, señala
Clifton Kirkpatrick, Presidente del Comité Patrocinador y también
Presidente de la Alianza Reformada Mundial. „El foco de atención
sobre Calvino ha permitido a muchos reformados revalorar su
herencia y sus vínculos mutuos. Ya no tenemos que disculparnos
por Calvino, sino que hemos encontrado muchos aspectos en su
pensamiento y obra que son veraces y pertinentes para la vida en
nuestra época.”  

La crisis económica y financiera trajo nuevamente a la memoria
la actualidad de la ética social de Calvino, indica Thomas Wipf,
Vicepresidente del Comité Patrocinador calvin09 y Presidente de
la Federación de Iglesias Protestantes de Suiza. Calvino abogó
con „un compromiso político-social infatigable“ por la regulación
del incipiente capitalismo para el bienestar de todos. Muchos
miembros de la iglesia reformada de EE.UU. habrían constatado una
„clara analogía“ entre las actuales prioridades políticas del
país y la agenda social de Calvino: inmigración, previsión
médica y justicia económica.

Roland Benz, encargado para las celebraciones del Jubileo de
Calvino en la Iglesia Protestante de Ginebra, lo confirma: „Algo
ocurrió en este año, pues tanto en los medios de comunicación
como también en el público más allá del ámbito eclesiástico se
transformó la imagen caricaturesca de Calvino.“ 

„El Jubileo 2009 acercó las congregaciones reformadas a su
Reformador“, afirmó Achim Detmers, Encargado de las celebraciones
del Jubileo de Calvino en Alemania.

El año del Jubileo ha revelado el impacto que ha tenido Calvino
en las distintas culturas e idiomas. Desde China hasta Argentina,
de Cuba a Sudáfrica, al igual que en Japón, Italia y Polonia, las
iglesias han documentado en forma impresionante a través de
actividades y publicaciones la difusión mundial de las obras e
ideas de Calvino.

„Nuestra gran esperanza es que el Jubileo de Calvino 2009 sea el
inicio de un redescubrimiento de la herencia de Calvino, que
puede cambiar nuestras iglesias y nuestro mundo en su camino al
futuro”, manifiesta Kirkpatrick. „Con el año del Jubileo hemos
puesto un buen fundamento con el que podemos realizar nuevos
aportes a la discusión ecuménica.“

Equipado con un llamativo logotipo y un sitio web en cuatro
idiomas, el año del Jubileo de Calvino 2009 despertó la atención

portal de información y conocimientos sobre Calvino.
