CCH pays timely visit to missionary David Landsborough Jr.

When Yuan Sheng Hospital’s Superintendent Chen Shou-dung visited 95-year-old David

Landsborough Jr. who had been living alone in UK since his retirement, Chen discovered that

Landsborough had tripped while trying to answer the door. Landsborough was immediately

taken to the hospital and was released recently after a surgery at UK’s Mayday Hospital.

Yuan Sheng Hospital is affiliated with Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH), which was founded

by Landsborough’s father, David Landsborough Sr. Chen happened to be in the UK attending

a conference scheduled on September 27 when he decided to visit Landsborough at his

>residence after the event.

After arriving and knocking on the door, Chen noticed the lights were on inside

Landsborough’s residence though no one answered the door after a long wait. Peeking

through a small hole near a window, Chen discovered Landsborough had tripped and was

waving at him. Unable to enter the house, Chen sought assistance from Landsborough’s

neighbors who gave him the house’s spare keys.

Chen took Landsborough to the hospital immediately and contacted Landsborough’s children.

Landsborough was later admitted to Mayday Hospital and doctors scheduled a surgery for the

>following day.

When CCH got word of what happened to Landsborough, it sent some of its top medical and

pastoral staff to London. The delegation arrived to London on October 2 and reported back

that Landsborough was doing fine and able to eat and talk. Seeing so many Taiwanese

friends brought back many memories for Landsborough, who began to retell stories of his

time in Taiwan. He even remembered the names of some of the hospital staff he had worked

>with.

The CCH delegation shared some photos taken in the 1970s with Landsborough, and was

delighted to find that he still thought of Taiwan often. Though suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, looking at these photos prompted Landsborough to write letters to his Taiwanese

>friends right away.

Toward the end of the visit, Landsborough offered CCH the medical kit he used to carry years

ago while doing medical rounds in Taiwan as a keepsake and to show Changhua residents

whenever they visit the hospital. Many in Changhua undoubtedly still remember this medical kit

and the bicycle Landsborough rode while doing his rounds.

According to CCH, it has been wiring money to Landsborough twice a year to cover some of

his living expenses. CCH will wire additional funds in the near future to cover Landsborough’s

medical expenses from this surgery as well. The hospital has also arranged for a personal

nurse to attend to Landborough’s health and daily needs.
