PCT welcomes 2010, proclaims Christ at Fengchia Night Market

For the first time ever, PCT General Assembly, PCT local churches and organizations held a

New Year’s Eve concert at Fengchia Night Market in Taichung City. Themed “Jesus is

powerful”, the concert lasted six hours and included many fun activities. Programs during the

concert included Christian rock music, dance routines, instrumental and choral performances,

and a few performances by renowned local artists.

This concert was co-sponsored by PCT Youth Ministry Committee, Changhua Presbytery,

Taichung Presbytery, Changhua Christian Hospital, Christ is Lord organization, and Fengchia

Business Committee. It was held outside the entrance gates of Fengchia University, the exact

location where Fengchia Night market is located.

According to PCT Youth Ministry Committee Secretary Itan Pavavalong, PCT had organized a

similar New Year’s Eve concert two years ago in Taipei and more than 30,000 people

attended. This turnout gave PCT an incentive to hold another concert again; this time, in

Taichung. The aim of planning such an event was to draw young people to Christ.

Itan said he hoped more youth activities could be organized in the future, including candlelight

galas. This event was made possible through the efforts of youth leaders who demonstrated

maturity and capabilities beyond their age. These youth leaders’ talents were also signs that

>God was at work in them.

According to Fengchia Business Committee member Wang Chao-yi, many people frequent

the night market and business areas of Fengchia, making it difficult to plan big events like this

one sometimes. However, the Committee hopes that churches will continue holding similar

events because they remind people of the importance of loving one another and caring for one

another. He also said that such activities helped foster a sense of community among people in

the area and welcomed future events that would draw people to business areas and introduce

>them to the gospel.

However, this success didn’t come without a struggle, said one student who helped organize

events. Event organizers received government approval documents for holding this event

merely one day prior to the celebrations. Though it would’ve been easier to hold an indoor

event instead, organizers were adamant in making this an outdoor activity because they

wanted to share the gospel with people from all walks of life.
