Young Aborigines offered golden opportunity to study at Mackay College

Kingston Technology has donated a sum of NT$150 million to help children from

low-income Aborigine families so that they can have a shot at pursuing higher

education. Aborigine students in junior high school whose test scores meet

entrance requirements for Mackay Medicine, Nursing, and Management College’s

five-year program will be eligible for a full scholarship, on top of a NT$5,000

monthly stipend to cover living expenses. The only requirements attached to this

offer are that students receiving this scholarship must pass a nursing license exam

upon graduation and serve in Aborigine reservations or remote, rural areas for at

>least two years.

This collaboration between Kingston Technology and Mackay College has already

received the Ministry of Education’s stamp of approval and will likely run for at least

the next five years. According to Kingston Technology’s CEO David Sun, he had a

burden to assist Aborigine families soon after Typhoon Morakot last year and

phoned an elder from Hsintien Presbyterian Church in Taipei to discuss ideas.

With the help of PCT Associate General Secretary Kho Sing-doh, who helped

contact Mackay College and helped establish a special fund for this cause, the

program was finalized after four months of intense meetings and consultations.

For the next five years, Kingston Technology will help 40 Aborigine students every

year in their studies at Mackay College. Sun has kept a low profile on his

contributions, choosing instead to direct attention to the importance of family

support. He emphasized that fourteen or fifteen-year-olds need a lot of help and

guidance from their families to choose and stay on the right path and work toward a

>brighter future.

Kho is urging all Aborigine PCT churches to let its members know about this once-

in-a-lifetime opportunity because it would enable Aborigine children to receive

vocational training, use their skills to help their own communities, make a better

future for themselves, and bless their fellow countrymen.
