Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP 2009/2010): The launch

By Teresia Mutuku, Communications Officer and Web Manager, WACC

A preliminary report of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP
2009/2010), coordinated by WACC, will be released in March, for the
Beijing Platform for Action Review +15 that will take place in New
York. The full results will be released in September 2010 accompanied
by simultaneous release of national reports in about 130 countries.

"We will be working with national coordinators in every country that
took part in gathering the data, for them to produce national reports
in their own languages, relevant to their particular situation in
their country", says WACC's Director of Programmes, Lavinia Mohr, in
an interview at the WACC offices in Toronto.

The global report, she says, will be published in English, French,
Spanish and Arabic for the first time.

Mohr further observes that the launch will be followed by a global
outreach publicity campaign to draw attention to the findings, within
the media profession and among media audiences.

"We want to raise awareness about the gap between what is and what is
possible about the search for high quality professional standards of
journalism and for fair and balanced representation of gender in the
media", she says.

The current phase of the GMMP project has been realized through the
generous support of UNIFEM and in collaboration with IFJ.

Over 15,000 news stories were analyzed during the Global Media
Monitoring day in some 130 countries, November 10.
