Diocesan gatherings consider finances, ministry challenges

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] The Episcopal Church's Epiphanytide season of
diocesan conventions and councils continued Feb. 5-7 with gatherings
in the dioceses of East Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi.

While snow and ice storms affected diocesan gatherings the previous
weekend, the Super Bowl figured into the plans of at least one
diocese. Mississippi Bishop Duncan Gray III announced prior to the
start of that diocese's gathering that the closing Eucharist on Feb. 7
would begin at 9 a.m. so participants would have time to drive home
before the 6:25 p.m. EST kickoff.

Buildings for a new tomorrow

Episcopal Church Building Fund offers symposium

[Episcopal Church Building Fund] As dioceses and parishes struggle
with spiraling costs and shrinking budgets, the church's most
significant physical assets - its buildings - are in serious
disrepair. Crumbling buildings are in many cases the single biggest
barrier to mission and ministry; every month more than three
congregations close their doors for good, according to the Church
Insurance Company.

An April 7 symposium hosted by the Episcopal Church Building Fund at
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia, will equip
church leaders to solve this problem in ways that make both financial
and pastoral sense, empowering the church to shift its focus to the
vitality of its ministry.
