CWS' Herlinger wins 2010 DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards

NEW YORK, March 10, 2010 - Two books with humanitarian themes by Church
World Service staffer Chris Herlinger have been honored with
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards by the Religion Communicators Council.

Herlinger, a CWS writer and editor, won an award of excellence for With
Courage, In Hope: Five Years After the Tsunami, a history of the 2004
Asian tsunami response by the humanitarian alliance ACT International.
Herlinger also won a certificate of merit for Where Mercy Fails:
Darfurâ??s Struggle to Survive, which examines the international
response to the crisis in the western Sudan region of Darfur.

With Courage, In Hope was published in late 2009 by Geneva-based ACT,
which is now known by its new name ACT Alliance, to commemorate the
fifth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Where Mercy Fails,
co-authored with United Methodist photo-journalist Paul Jeffrey, was
published by Seabury Books, a division of New York-based Church
Publishing Group.

Herlinger reported on post-tsunami recovery efforts by Church World
Service and other ACT members in Indonesia and India. With Courage, In
Hope contains that reporting as well as reporting from other ACT
communicators. On the Darfur crisis, Herlinger reported on CWS-supported
humanitarian efforts by ACT and its partners in Darfur and neighboring
Chad during visits from 2004 through 2008.

This marks the fourth successive year Herlinger has won a
DeRose-Hinkhouse Award. The RCC will present 113 awards to members at an
April ceremony in Chicago during its annual conference, held this year
in conjunction with Religion Communication Congress2010.

The DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given each year to active RCC
members who demonstrate excellence in religious communications and
public relations. Established in 1967, the awards are named for the late
Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, leading lithographers in
New York City and longtime friends of RCC.

The Religion Communicators Council is an interfaith association of
religion communicators at work in print and electronic communication,
marketing, and public relations. Established in 1929, it is the oldest
association of religion communicators in America.
