Missionary writes of 'strong faith and hard realities' in Haiti in
bulletin inserts for May 2

[Episcopal News Service] "Every time I speak about Haiti, I am asked:
'What is it like there?' The only word I know is 'hard,' writes the
Rev. Lauren Stanley, Episcopal Church-appointed missionary to Haiti,
in ENS Weekly bulletin inserts for Sunday, May 2.

Stanley writes of the massive difficulties still faced by the people
of Haiti some three months after the Jan. 12 earthquake, their faith
and courage, and the efforts - some of them misdirected - of others to
assist in reconstruction. "I believe that our role in the rebuilding
of the kingdom of God in Haiti ... is to demonstrate our faith first by
listening, then by partnering with the Haitians," she writes.

>OPINION

>Strong faith amidst 'hard' realities

>By Lauren Stanley

[Episcopal News Service] Every time I speak about Haiti, I am asked:
"What is it like there?"
The only word I know is "hard."

The devastation from the Jan. 12 earthquake has not suddenly gone
away. It has not been cleaned up, and the people are not yet better.
There truly is no word in any language to adequately describe the
scope and horror of this tragedy.

>EBAR PICK

"Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - The Private Writings of the Saint
of Calcutta" by Mother Teresa, edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk,
paperback, 416 pages. c. 2009. $14.99.

[Random House] During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor,
Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions;
her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying,
and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has
been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known,
however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles.

This collection of letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over
decades, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds
light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth
and intensity of her holiness for the first time. A moving chronicle
of her spiritual journey-including moments, indeed years, of utter
desolation-these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her
closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life
burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and
purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul.
