In the Diocese of Maryland, every day is Earth Day

>By Lynette Wilson

[Episcopal News Service] On the morning of April 22, the rector at St.
Phillip's Episcopal Church in Annapolis, Maryland, recorded a new
message; it began "Happy Earth Day," and was followed by a litany of
special events, including a farmers' market, a demonstration by a
master gardener, a vegetarian meal and an interfaith worship service,
with sermon by Maryland Bishop Eugene T. Sutton.

"This particular celebration is interfaith," said the Rev. Angela
Shepherd, rector, in a telephone interview. "This is the second time
we are coming together as a community [to celebrate Earth Day]."

For the past 40 years people worldwide have set aside April 22 to
celebrate the earth and create awareness and appreciation for the
environment. The celebration at St. Phillip's welcomes people from all
Christian denominations and the Jewish and Islamic communities.

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service - Hendersonville, North Carolina] Participants
in the last sessions of the Preaching Jesus conference here were

Preaching Jesus, believed to be the first-ever national Episcopal
Church preaching conference, is sponsored by the Episcopal Preaching
Foundation and the Kanuga Conference Center outside Hendersonville,
North Carolina. About 115 clergy and seminarians, including some from
other denominations, participated. Griswold was the conference's
chaplain. Previous ENS coverage is here.

Episcopal Relief & Development responds to recent disasters in Asia

[Episcopal Relief & Development] Following a cyclone in India on April
13 and an earthquake in China on April 14, Episcopal Relief &
Development has reached out to its partners in affected areas to
offer support.

The cyclone, which struck areas of India and Bangladesh, left more
than 100 people dead. Winds of up to 75 miles per hour uprooted
trees, downed power lines and destroyed an estimated 100,000 homes.
Episcopal Relief & Development's partner in the region, the Diocese of
Durgapur, has been providing shelter and immediate relief for those
left homeless by the storm.
